Will Carlsen retire after winning the WC?

This is the question that everyone should be asking.

Will Carlsen retire after winning the World Championship?

He is the youngest world champion, with the highest elo rating of all time, what could he do more?

There are no championships for the solar system or the galaxy, and if there was one Houdini would be the champion.

He could only lose, and become a mere mortal like everyone else.

While if he retires, he becomes a legend, like Fischer.

Further, he can only play with the same group of players of the last 10 years. Kasparov was complaining that he was playing only against Karpov, but a little search in my database showed more than 72 games between Carlsen and Anand, and more than 64 with Aronian.

Kasparov played 140 against Karpov in matches, which I agree must be boring. But today's tournament world, at Carlsen's level, the number of opponents is quite limited, so he plays always with the same people.

So what should Carlsen do after winning the World Championship?

Scottrf

Of course not. Why go from World Champion to nobody?

Maurill

Because there´s no more goal. Perhaps a 3000 rating...

Just like Fischer did (but officially rather than just disappearing)...?

Possible? Certainly, just as anything. Likely? Debatable at best.

Did Kasparov have no goals?

Defending the title is one goal, he's also stated in interviews he wants 2900.

Maurill

Hm, will the WC-Match be considered for his rating? Should be so.

Scottrf

Of course, they are rated games.

Maurill

I think he will soon reach 2900 and then it´s the art to maintain motivation for my oppinion. Even holding the title isn´t motivating as it´s to reach. Standing on top is another thing then holding it.

Scottrf

Well, the money is motivation. He isn't rich for life yet.

Maurill

That´s right. The problem is, that he (propably will) reach with 23 years all what is desirable in his profession. In a few years he will have millions dollar enough and I think he will need for himself a new goal. Of course I don´t know him personally but this seems not laying in chess. Playing for years the same guys, the same tournaments...I don´t know. Propably I mirroring my own view in this matter, when I would be in his situation.

Rational_Optimist

why retire? he enjoys chess and is the best and earns a lot of money.

he is only 23.

What could he do ?

Settle down, get a girl, reproduce, raise some chess-kids, write some books etc.
