Fischer said a lot of things. Doesn't make them all true. He thought the Russians were reading his thoughts through the fillings in his teeth.....He was good at one thing. Playing chess. That doesn't give him some prescient knowledge of future events.
Will technology ruin the game of chess?

Der der der. I mentioned nothing of how technology would be stealing the souls of human beings. I only mentioned the soul of the game of chess as it applies to how people who play the game seem to be so damned dependant on it in order to become the first "perfect" chess player the world has ever seen or something like that.

Fischer also stated that America is seen as a football country, a baseball country.... but no one sees America as an intellectual country. Fischer was as American as they came back in his day. He was just grossly and overly misunderstood.

please dont quote B fisher ..yes he was a great chessplayer a long time ago but his paranoia and racist remarks vs jews... it seems better try to quote carlson now lol that young chess champ is amazing. he played a draw vs kasparov when he was 13??? sure fisher is the only american worldchesschampion ever but he was a nasty bitch as a person even with chess and should have said sorry to the world before he died in 2008

Just because Fischer said a lot of very stupid things doesn't mean that, occasionally, he didnt get something right. Case in point.

A different view on the fair match hypothesis. What happens if you are evenly matched and you win most games? And then you play a "cheater", you learn something new, yet lose? Which was more beneficial, winning or losing and learning something? Additionally, is chess an activity with some tangible goal such as paying rent/mortgage, or is it a game? If it is a game, inherent in that game is some benefit? To me pushing the pieces around is good training for the unconscious, which influences my decision making. It is irrelevant how the opponent is making the moves, just make them. Even if I lose I still am obtaining a tangible benefit. As the game goes on, pieces disappear and space is gained, which is a very freeing feeling and especially valuable if you live in a city that is claustrophic. As the pieces disappear I feel that I also disappear and go somewhere else.

B fisher said a lot but kasparov played vs computers so if anyone could say something about that its him or try kramnik who played vs deep fritz in 2006 and lost 2 vs 4
but does a computer kill chess? i dont think it does it only can be very frustrating to loose from a machine.
but as computers develop new skills they still are invented by humans.
it could be that humans can be reinvented now themselves too ! science changes the world so now we got strong computers but soon we can have humans wearing upgrades connected to their brains too! or we even can change genes. where it leads?i guess noone can tell. in the future will human still be human or maybe cyborgs?
watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU1-YFbAifA
so if humans change will chess change?

What happens if you are evenly matched and you win most games?
If you win most games, then by definition you aren't evenly matched. But I understand what you are getting at.
Personally, I don't think I benefit much from chess. I am not good enough at the game to be getting much from it that I don't already get from all the technical, intellectual, and creative problem solving I do every day at my job.

The only way I can play chess these days is through "technology". Don't get around like I used to(disabled), so playing on the internet is it for me. My old chess playing friends have long since moved away and my current friends have no ability or desire to play. Therefore, I play against a computer or against humans on the internet. For me technology allows me to shop, interact with others, keep up with current events and play chess. For me, the internet(technology) is a godsend.
I did every bit of my Christmas shopping this year online. Never had to leave the house. THAT'S progress! :)

Computers will improve the chess skills if we use them right.
in games like online chess you could use computers of course, humans will change we call that evolution, not revolution,,how we change, thats up to us humans.
Technology can be used for good or evil..it all depend on us....

I believe chess will be "solved" by computers soon enough. The Rybka team has already solved the King's Gambit Accepted (3. be2 is the only move that doesn't lose by force against perfect play, if I remember correctly).
Eventually all the openings will be solved. But we'll still play because we're humans and we don't play perfectly, even if the solutions have already been found.
I am not saying you are wrong but I am somewhat of a skeptic and would love to see the evidence [re the kings gambit]

That was a fool´s day joke by chessbase.

Can chess itself be used for good or evil? (Discuss.)

Sure, Al, but only if you've been "good" this year.

the fact that now still computer power doubles each 18 month according to michio kaku... it does not mean that only they change. we humans are enginering at each thing we even are changing animals and plants changing their and in the future our genes. so how far in the future will you look?
the way we can program computers nowadays has changed too before we used databased programs but now we can let computers learn, reprogram themselves too...
if technologic inventions change our live sure they can change chess. in fact bobby fisher changed chess allready by inventing 960 chess ;-) the only thing that can change chess is human.
We got beside classic chess many exciting chessgames we could play now we got for example 3d chess ,cylindric chess ,vote chess ,3 player chess, all great games and dont forget chinese chess ;-)
but ruine chess? i dont think so

Moore's law won't be helping us much longer I'm afraid. It's getting pretty expensive to go to 14 and 10nm technology. It's about time we get something to replace the silicon. Quantum computers maybe.
As for chess... it will be a while before it's solved. Endgames with 6 pieces are solved and that database table is 100TB. So for now, we're ok.
Fischer said chess was ruined already, well before the internet. That is why he invented 960, to save chess from itself.
