I think being a GM requires talent and hard work, but being a NM seems doable for more people. . .it all depends on how much drive you have to get better (talent doesn't seem AS necessary). I'm hoping to get a NM title eventually, and it definitely seems possible. 2 years of chess got me this far, so in another 5 I can't see it impossible of having a title then.
Will you become a CM ? ( or a NM, or a IM etc )

No.
--- Thanks for the post DrSpudnik, You don't like FMs ? lol.
I'm not exactly sure what a FM is, but I don't have any interest in spending tons of time and money and effort to raise my rating to some M level. I don't think it would improve my life any and I don't think I need to impress everyone with my chess skilz.

drspudnik just want to spend his time here.

Who cares about bragging?! Win a chess tournament for the money (/prize), its a win-win. . .get paid to play games, kind of like a pro athlete

--- Well I guess that I kind of look at Chess-titles as being like ranks in the Army ( I was in the malitia years ago ) . We all start out as Privates but we want to get up there among the Generals.

Except the athletes make exponentially more money.
I agree with the OP, set a more realistic goal. That is what I did earlier this year (although many argue it is not realistic given my age): at age 44 I got my first English Chess Federation rating last Aug of 78 (1285 Elo) and want to be a CM (2200) by the time I'm 55. I decided to talk about my progress publicly; you can follow the story here: http://becomingachessmaster.com/
At the January refresh my rating was up to 97 (1428) and I'm hoping it will be around 105 (1487) at the Aug refresh. Long way to go, but 200 points growth in my first year is a decent start.

ThisisChesstiny: Thanks a lot for the info. All the Best Wishes in your quest !

The ever-constant focus on titles and recognition.
NO. I am quite sure I will never earn a master title. I would like to get good at chess; and eventually lift a really low uscf rating.
but for now, I will just work on getting good at chess, seeing tactics, and winning games here on chess.com.
I think people would get further ahead if they kept their focus on continueing to study, to do tactics puzzle, to play and to analyze their games....
work on the time part and let their rating go where its going to go.
chesstiny I like your blog. its cool to have blogs- so few people do these days.
Sort of makes it a joke if you win the World under 8 then you get the FM title automatically. Even though you generally need a 2300 rating the under 8 players struggle to be 2000.
Wow, that is ridiculous. Total devaluation of the title. I would be in favor of doing away completely with awarding titles for winning specific events, except perhaps in the case of the GM title for the WC qualifiers.
Also, nice username.

--- Pro-athlete ? Can I be a knuckleball pitcher please ?
Well I see the " Anyone can be a Super GM " thread is back again, oh brother. However I wiil soon be signing up for the Astronaut school ( anyone can be an Astronaut ).

Reading a book called "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell and he talks about how those that are successful masters need to invest 10,000 hours in order to become an elite player. There are a few mention of Bobby Fisher as well as Bill Gates and Bill Joy of Sun Microsystems. Large investment no doubt.

--- Thanks for the posts and the info Btelford.
We had a thread on the go here about becoming a GM in 30 days ( I kid you not ), also there was one stating that " Anyone can become a GM ". This begs the question why not shoot for a more realistic goal at first such as becoming a CM ( Candidate Master ) ? If and when you get to that level you can work towards the NM title ( National Master ) followed by trying to get to IM ( International Master ). Even if a person does get to the GM level later on there is also the possibily of trying to reach the " Super " GM level. Let us use a Golf comparison and go back to when Tiger Woods was at the top of his game. Of the millions of people who play Golf on this planet how many would NEVER be able to play in the same tournaments as Tiger ? ( the answer is 99.99 % ).
--- Well the " I Want To Be a GM " threads are coming in hot and heavy again. Let us look at this question as if we were in the Army. Do you plan to become a GENERAL before you are even a Sargent ??? ( HINT: you have to start at the bottom rank and then work your way up !!! ).
At the same time I do not want to appear too negative here but some people seem to think that getting a GM title is as easy as obtaining a driver's license, not quite folks, not quite.
--- The way that some people throw around the GM title at this site one would think that 4 box-tops from any Cereal and 25 cents mailed to the FIDE will get you a " Super-GM " title lol.

Last year i took chess seriously. I have a lot of free time and i spent it on chess. I watched readed, played a lot. And many people when they say this they quit after couple of months.. but more than half year now i still pursuit my goal to become 2 000 here and then attack OTB chess and reach CM level by end of 2018 and if i can more.
