We had a thread on the go here about becoming a GM in 30 days ( I kid you not ), also there was one stating that " Anyone can become a GM ". This begs the question why not shoot for a more realistic goal at first such as becoming a CM ( Candidate Master ) ? If and when you get to that level you can work towards the NM title ( National Master ) followed by trying to get to IM ( International Master ). Even if a person does get to the GM level later on there is also the possibily of trying to reach the " Super " GM level. Let us use a Golf comparison and go back to when Tiger Woods was at the top of his game. Of the millions of people who play Golf on this planet how many would NEVER be able to play in the same tournaments as Tiger ? ( the answer is 99.99 % ).

At the same time I do not want to appear too negative here but some people seem to think that getting a GM title is as easy as obtaining a driver's license, not quite folks, not quite.

I turn 20 tomorrow and started around when I turned 18. I feel like I’ll be able to become a CM but was a bit too late starting to become a GM. Nonetheless, I love playing chess and I definitely believe I can become a candidate master within the next 5 years with practice daily.

"... In a recently published issue of the journal 'Intelligence' there were numerous studies, analysis, and pieces on the 10,000hr rule. In particular, one study by David Hambrick and colleagues entitled 'Deliberate practice: Is that all it takes to become an expert', sought out to 'test Ericsson's claim that "individual differences in ultimate performance can largely be accounted for by differential amounts of past and current levels of practice." As a refresher, Ericsson was the original researcher who developed and then publicized the concepts, which then took off with Gladwell's Outliers, Geoffrey Colvin's Talent is Overrated, Daniel Coyle's The Talent Code, and numerous others who jumped on the bandwagon with their own spin.
In there research Hambrick reanalyzed 12 studies looking at expert performance in chess and music. Similar to Ericsson's original work, they simply looked at hours of deliberate practice for each and compared it to performance levels along their development. In the chess studies, they found that deliberate practice explained 34% of the variance in performance, and therefore 66% unexplained. Looking at the individual numbers is even more staggering. There were some people who had over 20,000 hours of deliberate practice yet never went beyond Intermediate, the lowest of the three levels (intermediate, expert, and master). Perhaps most striking, was the range of 'masters' was 832 hours to 24,284hrs to reach mastery.
When looking at Music, the results were very similar. 29.9% of the variance in performance was explained by amount of deliberate practice.
The whole study is worth a read as it delves into intelligence, personality, and other factors related to reaching 'expertise.' However, the take away to me is simply common sense. Does practice make you better? Of course it does, but it isn't the be all end all. And you know what, neither is genetics. ..."

I am already in my mid 40s and I don't have any natural gifts to play well. I have to study hard just to stay around 1000. Some people have the talent to play 1400-1500 without cracking a book. Probably no title for me unless they starting giving them away

i would not call it talent, because i am there (15xx) and i've never cracked a chess book. i think getting to that rating is recognizing patterns and not dropping pieces easily.

i see you joined just a few months ago, so, as you play more, i bet you get to that midrange rating.

I did not mean to put down the CM title when I said " or even a CM " earlier, however needless to say it is still a long way from that level to becoming an NM and then an IM before getting to the GM level ( nevermind the newer " Super GM " rating ).

Actually cab, I think CM and NM are roughly equivalent.  You're definitely right about the other stuff though.

That depends on which CM title you are referring to.  If you are referring to the FIDE CM title, then you are right in the since that achieving such titles requires one to crack 2200 (although I have seen people who haven't even cracked 2200 FIDE and yet manage to get a FIDE CM title by performing well enough at a certain event).   Since the general rating conversion for FIDE==>USCF is USCF=FIDE+100, then achieving the FIDE CM is arguably more impressive in that sense.

However, there is technically a national (US) Candidate Master title where one has to crack 2000 USCF and pull off 5 tourney performances considered impressive for a 2000-rated player in order to achieve it.  For example, I cracked 2000 USCF 12-13 years ago and pulled off my 5th tourney performance impressive for a 2000-rated player roughly 4 years ago.  That's how I got the national (US) Candidate Master title.

Unfortunately, only FIDE CMs are recognized here and the only national title recognized here is NM (National Master).
