To all you well wishes out there some great news...you are now being asked not to particapate in the crude habit of wishing other players ''good luck''.Not only is it a put down to players, suggesting that they can`t win without it but also most players wishing a player ''good luck'' are really hoping they lose and infact can`t wait to crush them when they play.If you consider yourself to be genuine in wishing ''good luck'' then why do you feel you need to be noticed or loved?

Good luck with your thread. Tongue Out

Wishing your opponent good luck is not an insult.
In fact when most people say good luck, it's kind of one of those wishes to both players
Your not necessarily saying:
I hope YOU have the greatest luck.
Nor are you saying:
I hope I have the most luck

In most cases, you are saying something like

May we both have luck.

I mean your still trying to win the game after you say "good luck" right?

You're probably still hoping that your opponent makes a mistake or misses a blunder of yours.

So your technically still wishing luck for yourself too!

I guess I could start wishing my opponent "potluck" or even "Luckenback".

Maybe you are just unlucky

Why? I never wish the player luck, except I'm sure he has no chance.

Because then he will need tons of luck.

CookedQueen

I don't play that stuff, so the number is without relevance

why u talk about pashak, I'm sure you don't know what off the top phrases he is able to drop ...

I'm not quite sure what it means to wish your opponent good luck in a two-person game where only one of you can win.  Does it mean you hope he's lucky and wins?

Maybe "may you lose valiantly!" is a better alternative? grin.png

Good Luck could also mean general good luck in life for a fellow chess player....the world would be better if we all had good luck.

Wow now THAT is how you know someone overthinks hints in life. Sucks to be you! Good luck! Obviously I don't truly mean good luck, that's idiotic to believe someone would actually try to be nice in this world, really I mean I HATE YOU in code)

valid points taking the phrase literally. But as it's not uncommon it rather shows some kindness while entering the game.

HessianWarrior

When someone wishes me "Good Luck" I reply with "thanks I'll need it".

HessianWarrior

@ inspektoroko   You're toast.

president_max

I agree with the op. 'good luck' has led to so much violence.

president_max

Not convinced? 2nd time's the charm

Uh, if wishing "Good Luck" were "banned", then I suspect Chess.com would be removing it from the quick phrases...  so good luck with your ban!
