And...when you're in any other competition or game...do the players resign or do they try and play till the last minute? I think it is just the easiest way out...

There are few comparable games or competitions, where the result is inevitable but the game not over yet. The only one I can think of is snooker, where a frame is indeed resigned even though it is always theoretically possible that someone will get snookered ten times in a row...

Anyway, when in Rome, do as the Romans. In chess, resigning is the respectful way, not resigning is saying "I don't think you know how to win this."

Thanks...

Mine just did without moving a single piece.

Playing on till the bitter end is the right thing to do when you're a beginner.

Once you've got some experience, and are playing better players, resigning in lost positions will be the right thing to do.

Carry on.

Agreed. It really depends on the ending, though. If you both are class D, and your opponent has two queens against your lone king, I guess there still is a chance of stalemate. I'd play it out against a class E player.

There are many positions that most amateurs don't know how to win. Even if you do, I'd make them prove it. I've won many games against people who never studied an endgame book. Simple tactics skill is not enough under time pressure. You have to know how to do each endgame.

If it is an obvious mate in 2 that my opponent has clearly been working on for a while, I'll resign.

I do not resign after losing a queen in the opening. That should be done above 1700. But I've won plenty of games against 1400 players after losing my queen. Many players on here are underrated or overrated or just having a bad day. Some 1200 players played stronger than me from the beginning, and some 1400 players were obviously weaker from the beginning.

I hate when they resign when I’ve got mate in one and we both know it. It’s just petty to not let me get that little bit of satisfaction from a checkmate

This is a 13-year-old thread resurrected by an insane spammer.

To be or not to be is another.
