World Chess variants - Queen as a Knight

I was taught to play chess from a childhood friend from South America (Brazil). I was taught that Queen not only can move like a Bishop or a Rook, but also a Knight (jumping pieces only as a Knight). I later learned that this was not common, in fact, was not legal.
Are there other variants of chess in the world depending on regions?
