Hi all. I don't know how many of you are paying attention to the world cup in Norway right now but it's exciting! There's a 14 year old (just turned 14 on June 2) chinese player named Wei Yi who's rated 2551 but I think his live rating is 2572. Thats not the big news, even though he is ranked #27 on the world junior list & is the youngest on that top 100 list. Also as a side note: he did win the under 12 world youth championship in 2010. The big news right now is his 1st round match win vs. Ian Nepomniachtchi (come on, say it real fast!) & then Alexei Shirov in the 2nd round. I watched both games vs Shirov but not the games in the 1st round & he didn't seem to struggle too much. Shirov looked to be giving it real effort too. Wang Hao claims this kid is at least 2700 level right now. The round 3 opponent isn't decided yet, he awaits the winner of Mamedyarov-Matlakov. They have to play a tie break tomorrow. Here's the elimination bracket:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_World_Cup_2013

Kamsky seems to be limping along, he has to play another tie break tomorrow. Nakamura has advanced, he'll be playing Baskaran Adhiban from India next. Their 1st game will be Saturday. Caruana is playing seemingly smooth chess. He's moving on to round 3. Kramnik, Aronian, Karjakin, Svidler, Radjabov all have to play tie breaks also. Ray Robson got beat 0-2 by Chucky. Onischuk lost his 2nd round match by offering a draw in the 2nd game of his match when he had to win! Very strange. Gelfand is through to the 3rd. Grischuk is playing well, he's in the 3rd.

The commentary is very good by Susan Polgar & Lawrence Trent. Here's the link to the world cup website, you can watch it live there. Games start at 9 am eastern time, 3 pm there in Norway.    http://www.chessworldcup2013.com/
