Would you...

Would you go to a public place such as a library or coffee shop, set up your board and wait for an opponent? Does it really work?

I by no means live in a big town (70,000 people), but there are several libraries and Starbucks and Starbucks-like establishments around. Whoop-dee-doo, there's even a bronze statue of a man sitting in front of a chess board with an empty chair on the other side located in the center of town. So I'm curious, has anyone in a town of my size ever tried this to find a game? How'd it work out for you?

I've tried Craigslist, and one couple contacted me and met at the local mall to play for a couple hours, but I'm wondering if this would be a worthwhile approach or a waste of time to just put out a board and see who bites.

I think it's a brilliant idea. It's great to see people playing chess outside in parks and it makes for a sociable conversation starter over a coffee I'm sure. Let us know how you get on :)

Well, I blitzed my mate for 2 wins, but then Kaspy walked into the park and challenged me. You don't want to hear the rest - it was a 3-0 massacre. I consoled him by saying he was still a bit rusty, even after thrashing Short, but he walked away very disconsolate.  Smile

And then you woke up...Laughing

I've never tried to do anything like that but I'd be interested to see if it would work...

I'm a rather shy person when it comes to meeting total strangers, so this might make an interesting ice breaker experiment... Public place, chess board all set up... If they can get over my ugly mug, they might just sit down...

How did it go NK? Very well I'm sure :-)

This sounds like a good way for a serial killer to meet victims.

I'm licensed to, and always do, but why do you ask? You'd have to be some sort of warped in the head to bust out a gun over a chess game... Especially in a Starbucks!

And they are all pretty bizarre to have happened in the first place LOL

In Chicago there is also a similar set-up in the Hyde Park neighborhood.

I used to work in a library and they had one chess.set in an inconspicuous corner. I think.if.they had a couple dedicated tables.with sets already set.up.that would be better. Bit I'm not sure how much interest it would have garnered.

I used to go to sell my junk at a flea market. I would set up two chess set with a milk stool for opponents to sit and play. I would not sit i would play both boards at once. They would think and think. I would just glance and move. Sure enough I got players.
But the rule was If I lost I would give them something and they had to take it. If I won they had to buy something from me.
I had regulars that would come year after year just to play and beat me.

Good job Denver, Medford, Oregon indeed Cool There's the community college, the main library, and the theater all within walking distance. I was considering that as a good location, BUT the jerks installed payed parking in the entire area, so lots of people are boycotting downtown entirely... It's a big drama, yuppers...

Not a chance!!

I totally want to try this out but I'm not so Shure it would work. cause the player might not be good or no one would come, but I'm still probably going to go to my local library and try it out.😃
