Yasser Seirawan's Breyer Patch comment...

During the 6th round of the Sinqefield Tournament Yasser Seirawan was responding to the question of what his most feared thing in life was.  He first said, "Being thrown into the Breyer Patch". But then recanted and said being on the same football field where Ray Lewis could tackle him. My question is; what is the Breyer Patch?

A briar patch is a thicket of thorny plants.

I didnt hear the context but it is normally associated with pretending to not want something to happen in the hope that your enemy will try and make it happen.

In chess its like a poisoned pawn I guess.

This is correct. Seirawan had said during So-Aronian that if Aronian had found a particular move he would burn incense at Aronian's feet, so they were trying to come up with something he would do if Nakamura found a particular move against So.

The whole thing was really corny, frankly.

I believe he meant he wanted to eat some ice cream. It's really hot there in STL....they say. And Breyer's makes some really good Rocky Road w/ caramel.

I thought he meant having to transpose into the Breyer Variation of the Lopez, but maybe petrosianpupil is more on target. It is amazing how many openings like Sicilian or English can can transpose to a Breyer like structure.
