What is the point of memorising a load of mainlines?  Just play chess.  It's not like people on here are playing for he world championship.  I don't avoid or go for mainlines because I don't know or care what most of them are, I just start playing chess from the start.

I'll leave the memorisation for people with nothing better to do with their time.

Well said, mate. Openings are so overrated among amateurs. I frequently have friends show me lost games in which they blame the opening, when it's clear to me it was the unsound middlegame play and blundering those two pawns that really lost. It's some kind of weird chess bias.

Players are always olay sidelines or some Dumb gambit opening because they are terrified to play mainline openings in where you actually have to try and remember openings. Everyone is scared of the unknown, just remember them and play them, everyone is so damn lazy. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )

What's the use of memorizing moves when you actually don't understand them. There are positional players too who don't go with mainlines and still do better. Eg: GM Joel Benjamin

Stfu

Play down long main lines against weak players. Once their memory is exhausted, they drift into losses.

I think players that open with mainline openings and those that don't, do so for a number of reasons. For example, beginners should develop the fundamentals first, that is before memorizing openings. Intermediate players should have somewhat of a foundation on mainline openings, because they may find theirself in a game where that information can help them. Often, I think players get bored and try to mix things up and go for unorthodox play; others may be attempting their own experiment with an opening.

I like following main lines as the middle game positions are very challenging. If my opponents deviates early, I have to use my brain early too :) But I won't call them pussycats :) OP, use your brain early :)
