I love chess because it's one of my lower-priority methods of procrastination, which I turn to when I've grown tired of a variety of other activities that I would otherwise find more enjoyable.

I love it because it makes me feel smart. When I land a fork on somebody who doesn't know that trick, they call me a genius. Makes me feel good.

+1 on alex. well-said.
I like the idea that I am just totally obsessed in something that is a complete waste of time.

Because it challenges me and connects me to others. I could travel to the other side of the world without being able to speak a single word of their language and be able to sit down a play a game with a person and connect with them because of it.

I love it because I can play it "alone" without being bothered by *cringes*...people.
So do you usually play against yourself or against a computer?
