Isn't Luigi just an Italian variant of Louis or Lewis?
So his parents basically just named him after several French monarchs.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never met an actual ethnic Italian named Luigi (although there are many named Mario). Luigi seems like the stereotypical Italian name that you see in, for instance, the names of Italian restaurants, but which isn't used so much by people nowadays.
