Latvian Gambit
Your favorite opening
My favorite is 1. c4. It was an opening I studied when I took lessons from Sammy Reschevsky, so it's sentimental to me. You can transpose into the King's Indian or Nimzo-Indian. Ruy Lopez, however, is the first opening I used extensively when I began playing and it's one I like when I just want a good classical comfortable game.
Something I've noticed is when playing someone rated much higher then myself is their openings often seem half hearted or rushed. Im ultra determined. It seems higher rated opponents seem to think they can do anything and somehow make up for it. most times they do but me being a 1350 now, lol once and a while I get an advantage and KEEP IT. usually not but careful on us come ups. another thing I eat alot when I play. it seems people's pschology changes if they think it took you a long time to make a move. To wit:" I myself stick to about 2 or 3 (openings & defences) for each side... And your right! Until your (1700--1800+), focus on the middle & end games... "
t0tally agree
Leningrad Dutch, Reti, Nimzo-Larsen attack, and Sicilian Najdorf. Sometimes I like to play the king's gambit as white.
Even though I still like the Bishop's opening : Berlin defense, for black. I like the Queen's gambit but not so much because I usually end up in the in the Nimzo Indian, which I don't like.So I'd go with the scotch.
I like the Grob opening (g4 - d5, Bf2 and early c4). OK It's not the best one but I mastered it well and I won more often than not. Much of my opponents are'nt prepared to defend against. Sometimes I play the same line with the Basman defence (Borg defense) when I play black side (g5 - d4 Bg7 and early c5).
Semi Slav Botvinik variation. This is the most exciting opening for the bravest chess players. Too bad, we rarely see this now among super GM's games.
