if you've taken an IQ test what questions are asked? I've taken them all

I tend to do much poorer on the matrices tests, so usually they involve logic puzzles, with a high WM load.

What I am asking is for specific questions.

Like... for example on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children one of the questions is "What are the similarities between a river and a mountian?"

No need to jolt my memory, that may interfere with the accuracy of future tests. I've taken the MENSA test in case you wondered. But I haven't taken one in two years to ensure the accuracy of future tests.

Got 9 of the questions right....

I take issue with the answer to number 7.

That's because I chose Washington, the first very obvious thing that popped out was that it is a state while the rest are cities.

I figured it was a trick question - that people would take Washington to mean Washinton DC.....but even then Washington DC is neither a city nor a state...

So it had to be Washington...or so I thought.

If 3 is average there are a lot of stupid people. Not challenging at all.

No wonder everyone on the internet has a 140 plus IQ. According to this test turning a computer on is more difficult.

I also agree with the person who said it is too knowledge based to be an IQ test.

To answer the question posed in #257, the MENSA test is an unofficial test (dubbed the "Mensa Workout") for people aspiring to join MENSA to test their skills. It does not give a specific IQ, from what I know.

I was going to say I could train my 5 year old nephew and in a week he would probably be able to answer such questions. While GM level chess skills are impressive, I would not go so far as to say they are indicators of genius.

Chess is not rocket science. The variables are limited and predictable -- 6 pieces, with specific rules - tactical skills involved is confined to this very simplistic game. No doubt, one needs a healthy brain with  good concentration, focus and memory skills.

But were one to find genius in tactical skills and strategy , one might better look to military generals or CEOs of powerful corporations or even politicians rather than chess GMs.

The people of MENSA are some of the biggest weirdos on the planet.  Not even in a good way.

Avatar of camberfoil

How so?

Avatar of camberfoil

None of us are void of marginal weirdness. We spend time on a chess site talking about out IQs compared to Kasparov's.

We're just a sample of the population. We all think we're above average, just like everyone else.

If you took my IQ and put it in a bottle. Then took Kasparov's IQ and put it in another bottle. You'd have 2 empty bottles.

Well, obviously, you can't put your IQ score in a bottle.

IQ tests measure your logic and reasoning abilities. Many of these questions (such as the one about composers and cities) test knowledge, and therefore have no correlation with IQ.

You could be the smartest person in the world with an IQ of 200, but if you weren't interested in classical music and had never learned about different composers before, you would get that question wrong. On the other hand, a borderline-mentally challenged person with an IQ of 75 who loved to listen to classical music would get that question right.

Most of the other questions are ridiculously easy as well. According to your test I have an IQ over 150, which is clearly wrong.

I'm pretty skeptical of IQ and the general belief that smarter people have better lives. Sure you can be smarter than everyone else but what does that mean? In my opinion, it has more instrumental than intrisic value.

I agree with comment 275. To answer someone else's question, IQ does not signify intelligence. It only means that someone with a higher IQ has a better capacity to learn new things, such as mathematics, or another language. Intelligence goes hand-in-hand with IQ some of the time, but the two are not directly linked. I know people who are in Mensa and dumb as boxes of rocks, but managed to get in because of their score on a test widely regarded as flawed. On the other hand, I know people who have 100 IQs who are very bright. There are many other factors at stake in terms of intelligence.

Also, unrelated, feel free to check out my forum topic on the misuse of apostrophies.

I said the same thing in post #271. Where's my credit?
