If a 2600+ GM who's willing to coach/train you but with no cost but instead as a exchange wants to live with you without paying rent would you let them ? Or how about in exchange for his/her services he gets to pick 1-3 chess books a month that you pay for him ? Or all he wants in exchange is for you to pay his expenses for tournaments every other month ? Would you take any of these deals also if the player is famous like Hikaru Nakamura would you consider doing all 3 just be coach by him ?

Seems to me that paying a coaching fee is the same as paying for tournaments or books.

Living with someone is different though, a lot depends on their personality.  Of course my first impression is "who cares, I'll put up with Naka (or whoever) as long as he's a good coach, I could learn so much!"  But I've had bad house-mates before and nothing is worth that kind of stress Smile

As long as they're a decent human being though, then sure, they can move in for 10 years Laughing

Is the 2600 player a 2600 FIDE rated person or 2600 USCF rated person

If I were super rich I'd pay Dvoretsky and Heisman to be live in coaches for a little while.  I seem to be making enough progress without coaches so far though but my next wave of books will be Aagard's GM Prep series where he goes over calculation, positional elements, and strategy/planning, which are advanced books on the three foundational chess skills.

All chess players should plan, know imbalances, and calculate, and those books brings those up to the next level and therefore automatically makes your attacking, defending, and endgame play better as well Cool

The best coaches/players never work for money

I wouldn't care if she coached me. When could she move in?

She's a beautiful cutie but I'd want to hire someone based off their reputation and expertise and Dvoretsky has a reputation as one of the best coaches.  Chess improvement is serious business especially if one is willing to make a financial commitment.  If I were rich I'd be swimming in women anyway  Cool

I would not let any of these people into my home.

C'mon, show a little charity. I think you should open up your home as a halfway house for wayward, hungry masters and grandmasters. I am going to start a petition. Who else thinks Fairy_Princess should become a patron saint of chess?

Who is fairy princess?

I have to say that I almost had a situation like this. The guy was not a master but a lot stronger than I and we knew each other from before and I gave him my couch for about 8 months when he needed it. When I got home from work everyday the chessboard was set up and we played and discussed chess for hours, needless to say my playing strength went up a lot.

That's awesome. As for everyone talking about Natalie I think she's married and I can't find it in me to go after a married women plus I agree with oogie that heisman is much better at coaching

Lou-for-you

My wife is a GM from Russia. She also throws hammers and midgets.

For them to live with you without paying rent I guess the first question is the money and the second question is if you like the coach.

The first question is easier.  How much would the coach normally cost per hour?  How many hours of coaching would you get with them staying with you?  How much would it cost for someone to rent without the coaching?  If the cost for the amount for the hours of coaching would exceed the amount for someone to rent from you, it's a good deal in terms of money.

The second question is harder.  Do you like their coaching?  Would you be willing to have them stay with you?  Are they nice and decent, rude, or between those two? ;)

About the books and tournament fees it would totally depend on how much they were.
