I would spend the time required if you want a true judge of your tournament strength. Play faster if you want a judge of your strength with a faster time control. Have the book myself but am studying other books first.
Your results in Chess Exam and Training Guide
What were you results when you first took up the test, and what was your elo back then?
How much time did you take for each position typically? The author recommended 20 minutes for each position which I think is tad much, so I was wondering if taking up 10 minutes each position in order to finish the book in half a day would be feasible and reflective of our true strength in each areas, or is it absolutely necessary to spend the required time as stated for each and every puzzle? Thanks!
Dude.
If you're already looking to cut corners (avoid working) by cutting the test time in half, this does not bode well for your continued chess success. I'm just sayin'
My results were all over the place- from 1600 to 2400 in both of his books. I spent 3 minutes to maybe 10 minutes on each problem. Some I just saw the solution right away [3 min] and some I had to think and think [10 min or so]. I also did it in the evening, when tired and after a beer. Sometimes I had lots on my mind and sometimes most levels of my brain were on chess so fluctuations were normal. [I am also very rusty so I'm sure much of the fluctuations were real]. Overall, I liked the experience a lot and now have some areas to work on. [and there are others like endgames I thought weak that are not relative to defense for example.]
