How do players abandon games?

It is easy, at some moment of a game a player might start feeling sad and switch to Youtube to feel better again

In general, I assume they close their browser window or something like that. More specifically, I can give you one and only one example, as that is the sum total of my experience in abandoning(*) games:

In a currently ongoing game during a rapid tournament, Chess.com popped up a notification telling me that my opponent just sent me a friend request. Intending to accept, I clicked on something - maybe the notification itself, or maybe the little general "you have a message" thing, or maybe something else; at this point I forget exactly what it was that I clicked.

After clicking whatever it was, I accepted the friend request, and then attempted to go back to the game. And that was the start of my journey of disappointing discovery.

Trying various things that struck me as obvious, such as going to the tournament's page and clicking on the game's link in that list, did not help. I seem to remember clicking on a bunch of different things like that, which I reached through a bunch of different paths, and always receiving weird messages along the lines of "That game has not yet been completed" instead of, you know, being brought to the game.

Eventually I was told that I had abandoned the game.

(*): "Abandoned" my foot. Yes, I am still salty.
