How do I add a friend so I can challenge him?

I know his name and my name, he is not on  my friends list.

how do I challenge someone who isnt on my list and/or how do  I get him on my list

Thanks, kohai, but he doesnt show up. I know he gave me his correct name, but he hasnt played a game yet, at all.  Does he need to before he'll show up?
