Now it is becoming very interesting.
At this moment I see at the same time:
- a small number 4 indicating that I should have 4 notifications
- when I hover over it, a message "No Alerts"
- one of my own topics just had a new message, that's the notification that I should have seen!
- I doublechecked that I am indeed still following that thread
Then I have another indication, that other people who are following my topic, are not seeing notifications when I post in there.
No other conclusion here than that the entire notifications system is a total mess!

The issue is still there. There are no pending updates. It happens also in Microsoft Edge. It also happens on different other laptops.
This is happening all the time last few days. The little white-on-red number should reflect whether there are really alerts. But this is now a bit messed up.
