Application Blocked by Java Security

Anybody having problems with the latest version of Java?  I tried to use the computer in the tactics trainer and it no longer ran as the Java version was no longer up to date.  After loading the new version, now the error message says the applications must now meet the requirements for the High or Very High security settings or be part of the Exception Site List.  The name no longer working is "Chess.com Play against computer applet".  I tried adding https://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com and https://www.chess.com to the Java exception lists but nothing seems to help.

Java has real security issues.  Why not wander over to V3 ("Try the new Chess.com" at the bottom of every page) ?   The new "play against the computer" has 10 levels, a coach mode, and even 960.  Time to say goodbye to Java. Wink

Thanks for the tip!  I am trying it.  Do you know if V3 still in beta mode or will both versions continue to exist?

Martin_Stahl

It is currently in development/beta but is supposed to be done sometime this Summer.

At some point after it goes Live, the old verson will be retired.

Latest guesstimate is summer time for the official V3.  Someone from staff wrote that; I'm just the messenger.  The beta looks pretty good right now except where they're in the middle of tweaking it.  Both versions will continue for a few months after the official release but eventually we'll all have to use V3.

Day late and a dollar short again Laughing

I upgraded to the latest version of Java, and I experienced the same issues.

Try v3 instead.

How do I run V3? Please.

Roll your cursor to the bottom of the page; that's right, down by the green pawn, and click on "Try the new Chess.com".  The only bummer is all the new little symbols you have to click on and remembering which is which, but if you rest your cursor on one, a caption comes up telling you what it is.  Have fun!

I've been using play against computer on chess.com for years.

With latest Java update, the application is blocked.
I open up a game in my game archive and click on "Finish Game Vs. Computer"

Java Application Blocked popped up with this message.

"For security, applications must now meet the requirements for the High or Very
High security settings, or be part of the Exception Site List to be allowed to run"

The issue appears to be related to these files.
https://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com/assets/java/vscomp/ChessApplet.1.14.18.jar
https://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com/assets/java/vscomp/ChessApplet.jnlp

I tried adding all of the following to the "Exception Site List" to allow application to run

https://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com/
https://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com/assets/
https://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com/assets/java/
https://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com/assets/java/vscomp/
https://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com/assets/java/vscomp/lib/
https://www.chess.com/
https://www.chess.com/play/

I am on Windows 8.1 with latest IE11 and Java Version 8 Update 71.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Java, rebooting several times as well as examining all settings in Java configuration,
but cannot get the play against computer working as it did as recently as recently as two days ago on Tuesday.

V3 is not a solution for anything.  I have tried it off and on for over a year as recently as last week and V3 is a dismal failure to date.

Is there a workaround or does chess.com need to change how application is signed for Java?

Please help and post solution where users can easily find it in FAQ.

And I thought I was bad about reacting to change. Wink

This is so frustrating!

I don't have the 'try new chess.com'. I guess it's only for paid members.

It is available for anyone, unless something changed.

Try this instead.

I just tried banging my head against by trying again "Finish Game Vs. Computer" and was greeted by a chess.com dialogue box stating:

Modern browsers no longer support Java, the technology we used for this "Play Against the Computer" feature.

Good News! The new Chess.com has a MUCH BETTER Computer opponent with many more features, and it‘s ready now!

Try the New Chess.com Now!

(You can easily switch back at any time)

Chrome stopped support, but IE11 still supports if applets are signed properly, so maybe there's hope.

I guess we'll have to use V3 if we want to finish games against the computer :-(

SteelyKing

OK, folks.  Just back from trying the V3 to finish game vs. computer.

It actually is better and much more solid than the Java applet which kept having pieces disappear.

It's the first thing in V3 that I didn't hate the look and feel of.

The "computer level" setting is 1 to 10...

Would it be so wrong to give the computer an ELO rating estimate?

The biggest knock on V3 was the way it was oversold as being "almost ready" when it was garbage for past 1-1/2 years..

I don't know why they waited for V3 to put the computer play in the browser, but it is a good thing :-)

Looks like good progress in just the past few weeks cleaning up the V3 interface.

They eliminated a lot of the clunky tiles and integrated some of the familiar hover over drop-down menus which is what I hoped they would do for browser based V3.

I genuinely hope to find more things to like in V3.

I think you'll like what they've done to the TT also.  There's a custom unrated mode where you can practice any tactical motif you choose.  You can sort the puzzles by rating or just do ones you've failed in the past.  And no more losing points on puzzles you get correct...

Please tell me where "Play against computer" is? I've tried all the icons on the page and searched help and FAQ. Is this feature available in the new chess.com? If so, where? I'm asking about "Tactics Trainer" where it gives the option, after either completing the right moves or making a mistake, to play the problem against the computer.

Bad new is I don't think it made the cut.  Lots of new features that allow you to filter just what kind of tactics you want to practice, but I don't see a way to play it out.

Good news is that all 4,000 lessons in the Chess Mentor can now be played against the computer.

OksanaByool

That's interesting, I thought I read it was on V3 and also also announced it in the introduction video. Your saying these are only referencing the standalone "Play Against Computer"? That's a shame if so, I loved being able to play through to see if I might have a different way to win. That's just one reason, there are many others. I hope they put it in the new V3 soon!

RobEHoffman

Unlimited TT, with its "Play against the computer" after failing a TT problem was, for me, the most valuable feature of chess.com. If it doesn't come back very soon I'll be off to try other sites.

OksanaByool

Happy to hear that, maybe if enough members express there preference for it, we can get it.
