I actually paid for a different reason. The no ads thing was just a bonus. :D

Could be true, but doesn't have to be.
A lot off MMOs with freemium models just use the free players to fill up the servers.
From a buisiness perspective, I assume this is what we free guys here on chess.com do - we make the experience better for the premium players by not causing them to have to wait 2-3 minutes for each game.
