Penalties don't necessarily have to be against the rating. A player might accumulate "poor sportsman" points for a timeout. After accumulating enough points they can have their activity restricted, say, by limiting the number of games they can start. For example, if you can only start 5 games, then it hurts you to let your time expire rather than resign because that game takes up one of your precious allowed games.

Half the points for time out

I hate to be harsh, but less points for a timeout is a very bad idea. You are actually giving people incentive to let their game timeout! There should be incentive not to timeout. If a player wants to abandon a game, they should resign it.

Half the points for time out

That's not such a good idea because it would encourage everyone to time-out when losing. You lose fewer points. Your opponent gains fewer points.

A trial period could provide the answers, utilising a significant loss of penalty points.

Well a (possibly)final thought-- are the administrators asleep  ?  ---   what if your so called "BEST WIN" could actually have been your "WORST LOSS" at next move if game had continued !!! Situation is really a bit ridiculous

Two questions: One, What is the mate that you were threatening in that game. And two, why can't a person just say that a game 'does not count' for his best win.

The mate was in another game I  was given as a win by time out. on second point I agree and have told several gamers that my best win was essentially a misnomer and indeed a "FICTION" in any rational viewing of the facts. I think all the evidence is out now and it only remains to get the organisers to respond to it.

My best win if you use the record that www.chess.com records is when I was at 1226 and I won against 1395.  However I don't think of it as a best win because like all of us do at times my opponent made an error and took a pawn while forgetting to completely check the board.  He took the pawn with his queen and in doing so lost his queen.  A few moves later he resigned. I think seconds after making that move he realized his mistake because he made a comment to that effect on the message board. I do think I was playing good up to that point.  After gaining his queen I certainly took advantage of his lost and I am sure that is why he resigned.  I have been in games where I had the advantage and my opponent turned the game around.  Actually there are games I have played where I was greatly disadvantaged and came back to win that I have a little more pride about.

my best win was ... a "FICTION" in any rational viewing of the facts.

I demonstrated you had a winning position. TME, mxdplay4, greyfox, Erik and I also explained whether you win by checkmate, resignation, or time... it's a win.

It sounds like Erik is working on a feedback system which might help with the major dilemma of vacation abusers and minor dilemma of time-outer's! Smile

That makes sense. "Best Win" currently means "Highest Win"... perhaps it should be renamed to "Highest Win" to avoid confusion. It would also be neat if we had an option to show off our favorite game in our profile. Then you could show off the game where you fought back from a losing position to score, I could show my draw against a much stronger opponent, and chancer could show the best player he checkmated.

A win on time is a win. Arguably if you had spent as much time thinking about moves as your opponent your position would be better. If opponent spends time finding better moves then it is their fault if they run low.
