Did he take your pawn "en passant"?

It was not an illegal move. It is one of the rules of chess and has been since the Middle Ages.

View the game in your archive. Click on "Get PGN". Copy and paste the PGN into the Game Editor (the chessboard icon on the top left of the forum text box) following the instructions that are given.

In your game posted above there is no illegal move or bug. If you do not know the en passant rule that is your error.

I think you should learn the rules of chess before you comment on bugs..

He is probably a beginner chess player. Most people who have simply been taught by their parents or whatever to play chess aren't familiar with an en passant. I was taught to play chess by my dad but it wasn't until I started to attend a chess club at a library that I learned from the chess instructor there what an en passant is and only now do I have a better understanding after carefully reading the rule.

IFF (if and only if) you move your pawn two spaces on its first move to a square directly ADJACENT to an enemy pawn, the pawn is in essence considered a "cheater" pawn and the enemy pawn is permitted to capture it (THE FOLLOWING MOVE ONLY!!!) as if it had moved one square. Highly recommend looking at Pixir's joke game for a better depiction of an en passant.

Why did I feel like I was playing PacMan?

It is not the fact he is a beginner, nor that he does not know the rule.

The point I take issue with is his capitalisation of title; use of multiple exclamation marks; statement that there was an illigal move; demand to have "it" fixed.

This is the forum version of stamping your feet and throwing your toys out of the pram at the same time (no mean feat).

Which is why I responded in kind, although the irony went over his head.

Actually, I think a lot of people think it's a bug error. [Chess.com's policy is to not discuss competitor web sites - David] (another medium where I play chess) has this in their FAQ:

Illegal pawn move ("En passant capture")

This is probably the most frequent [my emphasis] mail every chess software developer gets: "My opponent just captured a pawn on a square it was not standing on!" This is called "en passant" capture - if a pawn makes a double step (i.e. "e2-e4" or "e7-e5"), it can be captured by a pawn as if it only has made a single step. A black pawn on d4 can capture a white pawn after e2-e4 on d3. This is only possible in the very next move though. So this is not a bug but a feature.
This is not the OP "stomping his feet" after losing. This is definitely the OP thinking that there actually is a bug in the system. Maybe he's a little bit hyperbolic in his approach to using all caps and exclams but I don't think the OP is stomping his feet. I really think the OP just doesn't know what an en passant is.

This is why yeres30 is blocked. You do realize that chess.com is probably the ONLY internet medium where you have to hit the draw button (which I did PRIOR to my repetition). What did yeres30 do? He FALSELY accused me of not hitting the draw button when I did.

I was NOT "stomping my feet" about losing that game. I was simply pointing out an OBVIOUS problem with the software on this site that OTHER online chess mediums do not have. Why? Because the engine declares an automatic draw for you. I should not have to hit a button in order for a draw when playing online chess to be made.

BTW, I mentioned in that thread that staff agreed with me that there was a bug. You do not agree with staff then I take it? I will report you if you bring that up one more time because I blocked you because I was fed up with your false accusations on that thread and now you continue them here?!? You're a disgusting pig, yeres30.

Then a lot of people are ignorant of the rules of chess.

"ERROR"....  "illegal".... "happened 3 times".... "fix it pls"   and nine exclamation marks. I call that stamping your feet.

Lagomorph,

So you were never a beginner ignorant of chess rules? BLOCKED!

I will repeat what i posted above:

I was indeed a beginer and ignorant of the rule at one time.

The difference is when it happened in a game i played for the first time I questioned my opponent in a measured and inquiring way. I did not accuse him of cheating or tell him to take it back.

Neither did it take three occurences for me to realise it was my own understanding that was lacking.

DavidIreland,

If you want to discuss the draw feature, go to the forum linked by yeres30. This forum is discussing en passant captures and whether that was a bug in the system.

Lagomorph,

You fail to understand that this is a basic first-time human reaction that he is having. Clearly, you acted differently however you are badgering the OP by saying he is "stomping his feet". The OP thought it was honestly a bug and had no idea about en passant rules.

I am not badgering him at all. I am badgering you for sticking up for the idea that it is better to shout and scream when one does not understand something, rather than seek out the answer.

Avatar of AutisticCath

Fair enough.

Stop badgering me for trying to understand his perspective.
