Bug report in Tactics Trainer

Hi,

It seems as if there is a bug in the Tactics Trainer User Interface. It is impossible to select the Start and Destination squares on the first move of the Problem. Drag and drop is the only option - but is not particularly smooth, sometimes requiring a click in the middle of the drag to continue moving, sometime requiring another click to release. This is very frustrating when racing the clock!!

I'm using IE7 on a Vista Ultimate laptop with a touchscreen. (However dragging on the touchscreen is impossible due to the problems reported above.) However Tactics Trainer forces me to use drag'n'drop on the first move!!

I really hope you can verify and fix this as it's a big kink in usability for me.

Brilliant site otherwise - keep up the good work!

many thanks,

Danny

It seems that the Game Explorer has slightly different behaviour - after the new position is loaded the board requires a first click to change sides (current move becomes last move - blue to yellow transition) and only then can a piece be click-selected. This is better than the Tactics Trainer - but not ideal.

A single-click is all it should take to select a piece.

Thankfully Chess Mentor doesn't suffer this problem - and as a result is very finger-friendly.

Danny

I don't find this problem with IE 8. Maybe it's time to upgrade?

Hi Ryan,

Great to see such a quick response! Very reassuring.

I upgraded to IE8 Beta2 to see if this would fix it. Unfortunately the behaviour is the same.

Perhaps this is to do with the fact that I'm using Vista with a tablet PC. Would anyone be able to test this?

thanks again,

Danny

I also have vista on a laptop. Maybe it's just your computer?

erik

it's broken for me too :) i'll work on it. what bothers me the most is that you can't use the drag/drop effectively... i never use click-click.

Hi Erik,

Many thanks for verifying this. The problem with drag'n'drop is that while the drag is initiated corrected, the drop fails to happen when the finger is lifted from the screen. I guess you will need a touch-screen laptop to verify this. I have the excellent Dell Latitude XT which has superb touch support.

I still feel that 'click-click' is faster and more precise when using touch. And touch is far more fun than the trackpad!

I hope that you at least manage to enable single-click selection in all the boards on the site - it would really help me enjoy the site fully (and put away the keyboard and trackpad permanently.)

warmest regards,

Danny
