can't connect to friend

My husband and I try to play each other but always have problems connecting. he's online and in the app but my phone shows that he's not online. I challenge him, and the challenges show on my phone but never appear for him. any ideas for what we can try?
If challenging him does not work, try letting him challenge you.

When you go into live chess, above the chatroom there is a small tab there called "Friends". Click on that. If your friend is on your friends list, and is in live chess the same time you are, you will see their name in that list so you can challenge them.
If they are on your friend list, but not showing in that live chess Friend tab, they are not currently in live chess.
