Can't switch over to v2 anymore!

I can no longer switch over to v2 from v3, which I've always been able to do up to this point.  Is v2 officially dead now?  Or is this just a temporary bug?

BryanCFB

If v2 is a thing of the past could you (Chess.com) remove anything that makes one think it still exists, such as Old Site next to the up and down arrows that can appear in the sidebar with some maneuvering or this message which now appears after clicking Old Site:  Did you mean to switch to the old Chess.com?, followed by the Click here to switch link?

Thanks.

Looks like they followed through on your suggestion, which they should have done without being told.  I bet there are some folks who are not happy about this, but I'm not one of them in this rare instance

The programmers are probably working on v4, whether we need it or not.  Remember, when you enter the Twilight Zone of the internet, the signpost up ahead says NEW AND IMPROVED* and at the bottom next to the asterisk in small letters is the awful, blinding truth: *unremitting change for change sake.

I actually prefer v2 although I have incorporated the use of v3 more lately, especially for the analysis feature which I use to check my analysis sometimes, although usually only after I post it because I don't want to become lazy and reliant on engine analysis.  And as far as I know lately all analysis and puzzles I have posted in v2 (which I prefer to posting in v3) have been viewable in v3.

So when v2 is inevitably laid to rest, which appears like right now, I will miss it as I found it much more user friendly than v3 (perhaps because I was way more used to it).  But I'm not overly concerened.  I know I'll figure v3 out.Smile

I have to agree with you about creating moves and variations for a PGN.  Sure v3 provides analysis if you make a mistake, but I think v2 was easier and more intuitive in many respects.

People do not like change.  Sure some have left/will leave when V2 goes away, and some will adjust.  While i prefer V2, I also understand the need to upgrade.  While there are things about V3 i dont care for, its not a deal breaker.

if v2 is really gone forever, that is a shame. If you guys work on v4 by now. PLEASE make sure that you make a better design that is focused on practical overview and intuitive navigation. As to me v3 was not one step back but at least 20 . It is just so user unfriendly - only trying to emulate the crappy look of win 10 and other bad design. Made me even consider to quite my account completely.

We are working to add it back. It was not intentional. Should be fixed later today. That said, it certainly WILL be going away soon. I would recommend you start to spend some time on V3 to get to know it better. Everything takes a little time, and then you get used to it. I've been through 4-5 major changes on my iphone. And with Windows. And with my favorite running shoes. And learning to drive on the left hand side of the road (you guys are nuts!). After a while, you just get used to it and cannot imagine how it used to be. That said, I know the process isn't easy or fun for everyone. But this is how software works. The YouTube, Facebook, Google and every major site of today is not the same as it once was. And when they change, everyone is mad and says it is a step backwards. And then in a few days they are used to it. I'm not trying to sound uncaring - I care a lot! I'm just being realistic. We've kept V2 around for a VERY long time to try to make every last person possible happy, and have made a lot of changes to make V3 more like V2 in many ways. The last hurdle is that V3 does not perform as well on older computers (especially the people still using Windows XP!). We are working on speeding it up for older CPUs. Once that happens, we will finally retire V2. Just like we did with V1 long ago. I'm sorry for those who are frustrated by this. I truly am.

No worries Erik.  I'll handle v3 just fine once I'm used to it.

And thanks for taking the time to respond.

When they take away V2 may be when I have to stop being a member.

Right now it says  how to stay on V2 but it does not work. tear.png This is poor form..

Good decision

Question: With V2 on vote chess I am able to diagram suggested moves and continuations for the teams I am on.

Can this be done with V3?

Yes it's possible in V3 happy.png

What you say is true, Eric, but that doesn't change the fact that the tools we use to perform our daily business are changing at a faster and faster pace.  That makes it difficult to become proficient with a tool so its use becomes second nature, becomes part of you.  After all, a tool is a means of getting something more important done, hopefully quickly and efficiently, but that can't happen if the tool hasn't a chance to become habit.  For example, I pick up a drill and I know immediately how to use it; the motor and battery may be improved, but its basic functions remains the same.  This is not always the case with software or website design.

Don't get me wrong, I realize this is inevitable.  The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has a clock on its cover that used to show five minutes to midnight.  My cultural anthropology professor chose it as an analogy for all the inventions created since the dawn of man, that is in the last five seconds in a 24 hour day.  That because inventions beget more inventions exponentially.  However, in the software business it seems these "inventions" are cosmetic make-work projects to present a new face to an old system instead of genuine improvements in efficiency, which in the past you would expect from a new, physical invention.  As a retired programmer, I saw this too many times to count.  Now, I'm not saying this is the case here, but it is with numerous websites.

There is one genuine improvement on V3.

If you ae trying to open a really looooong thread, V3 can actually do it. V2 cannot.

There is one long thread I spend a lot of time on, so I have to switch to V3 for that, daily. But then I always go back to V2.

I like the automatic spell check on V3. The rest of it sucks.

Still works?

For what? Not for live chess.

Is it Chessopedia you go back for?

Version 3 is kind of like the taste of vinegar. Erik says just use it more and get used to it, then you cant imagine how it used to be. Nope. It doesn't matter how much you get used to the taste of vinegar, or how much you use it, it's still awful. And it's pretty easy to imagine how it used to be.
