Every time I hit “Play”, i get “Challenge cancelled”. This is a new problem that started today only. I run iOS v12.5.7 on an iPad Air which cannot be upgraded. I am running an older Chess v4.1.11 which cannot be upgraded from the iTunes store because it requires iOS 15 or later. Is the problem temporary, or did something change today on the back end servers which prevents old versions of Chess to play from now on? If I delete my Chess app, I suspect that the older version v4.1.11 will no longer be available on my country’s iTunes App Store. I can still play bots but I cannot play live opponents.
There was a change to how games are hosted and old app clients can no longer connect to play random (or direct) challenges. It was a planned change.
I think tournaments may still work, for a while, and other features of the app will as well
