If you are cornered in check and can't move,then it is check mate. If it is your turn to move but can't, because you don't have any pieces (pawns,knights,bishops,etc..) that can move and you can't move your king without putting it in check then it is a stale mate. As for the second part of your question. I think maybe you repeated the position more then 3 time which then is ruled a draw. I hope this helps...Welcome to the Brotherhood of wood pusher!

It could also be that the Chess Titan program pre-installed in your PC has a problem if there's no perpetual check made as 1alwayslearning mentioned above.
