choosing black when issuing a challenge is not available

Since the server was restarted. The drop down menu that used to be available in the challenge issuing window is not there any more. Every time I issue a challenge I find myself with the white pieces, why can't I choose black any more like before??

Yes it is for Live

Sorry about that, this was my first post. I found out soon after that there is a Live Chess forum. I've posted this over there and CyberSensei explained it to me.

Anmarvelous,

The option to select "white/black" has been removed and is now based on your previous game and your opponent's previous game. If you play the same opponent a second time, the side will switch unless the previous game was aborted.

yes this is happening to me to but im stuck with black with no way of being white!!!

Precisely my point earlier!

And, I only want to practice white with a specific opening (experimental for me!)

We need to 'gang' up to demand a restoration of the option to choose, don't we.  So, if Chess.com staff are monitoring this - please heed the requests and try to do something about it !!

i would really like to hear from the staff as to why this option was removed. if it's a serious issue, i guess i can deal with it, but it still sucks. so far i haven't seen any staff post a comment on this yet.

the reason is that some people are abusing the option to just play white only. as an example we found one member who had more than 1,000 games as white... and 19 as black.

who goes around at a chess club and says "i'll play you, but i get white". it doesn't happen. you sit down, then you decide by luck who plays white, and you setup and play, then reverse when you are done.

if you want to play one particular color you can do so as unrated (for practice), or you can directly challenge someone with a specific color.

i'm open to hearing reasons for adding this back, but removing it removes abuse and confusion.

thoughts?

I think the reasoning is sound, but what's to stop someone from going in and scooping up all of the challenges that offer them white?  Perhaps who plays what colour needs to be obscured altogether until the challenge is accepted.

I just realized this is for Live chess and not turn based so my comment above is a non issue.  That said, I think it would not be a bad idea to implement this change in turn based as well.

Won't they then just abort the wrong colour games when they do find out the colour?

Avatar of TheGrobe

Yes, I suppose that's a possibility -- is that not also a risk with the recent change to Live as well then?

I'm convinced this selective seek acceptance happens, but when a floated it I didn't exactly get what I'd call overwhelming corroboration: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/equal-opportunity-seeks.

The option to play "preferred color" is still available when issuing direct challenges to other members. The "preferred color" option was removed for random seeks only.

If you would like to play white, challenge one of your friends and select 'I play as white'

Great idea and entirely proper. I've accepted these "Black only" challenges and upon rematch the following dance takes place. They accept the challenge, realize they have Black this time, they abort the game and then send you a challenge in which you have Black, twice in a row! Time to stop this childishness.

I think it's a good idea that the colour of the pieces you play with alternates now - to play white every time is like cheating in an exam - ultimately, you are only cheating yourself. Playing white every time may raise your rating, but your rating cannot be taken as an accurate assessment of your talent if you haven't played an approximately equal number of games with the black pieces - in my humble opinion, of course.Cool

There have been a number of threads about this and in each of the ones I've seen, out of curiousity, I've taken a quick look at the games archive of the original complainant to find whether they've overwhelmingly chosen White or Black.  In every case except for this one the answer has not been a surprise.

hey, i've complained too and i've never pre-selected one color over the other. i still think you should be able to (which you can still, just unrated - which i agree with).
