This is a legal en passant move - not a bug.

I hate these kind of posts. If you don't know how to play chess, you shouldn't be at a chess site.

Art is right, it is en passant. It has been around for over five hundred years.

yup this is not a bug but a legal move, just like castling!!! Go & check out the en passant move & how it is played.

This is a learining site.  If you don't know how to play chess and want to learn this is precisely where you should be.

Fair enough, but the implication was that the original poster shouldn't be on this site at all.  I don't think that's the kind of welcome we should be extending to new players.

RainbowRising, everybody learns from mistakes.  I am sure you did too.  All I can say is that the person is naif but as for check2008, is quite rude.  I am sure he meant no harm but rude is rude.

As for the alleged complaint, what a better way to gain knowledge!  At least now the person now that it was not a illegal move.  You cant simply say this is right & that is wrong?  If it is, show it to me in black & white!!!

I didn't mean any harm.

As YWK is a new player, of course we all welcome him here to Chess.com. If he doesn't know the rules (which he obviously doesn't, otherwise he wouldn't have made this post), then Chess.com provides a comprehensive guide to chess rules and basic strategy here: http://www.chess.com/learn-how-to-play-chess.html

If he is new to chess and wants to learn, he should have gone to the "Learn" tab at the top of the page and clicked the very first option "Chess Rules & Basics."

It's a very simple process to go through. You want to learn the rules YWK? Fine, go to "Learn." Nothing tricky about it. I don't doubt that you're a smart person or a respectable person, but before accusing a computer of cheating, learn the rules of the game.

or if you don't know how to play chess, a chess website is the perfect place for you.  i think it's impressive how collectively, chess players can be total jerks to newbs.  nice job guys.

um excuse me, but that sort of language will will not be tolerated

To the OP... yeah, it's not a bug, it's a weird chess rule that a LOT of people are unaware of at first.

To everyone... This type of question is far from uncommon. I probably answer this question at LEAST once a day in my job here, and though I won't speak for her, I bet Kohai would say she gets it at least as often. Some folks don't know that we actually answer e-mails that come in, so instead of asking us privately, as most do, the OP thought he'd put his question on the forums. Let's please be nice to those who are asking common questions. If their asking upsets you, or makes you angry, then please just don't respond. Thanks.

I,ve found the en passant move a bit perplexing myself and i,ve played a while and im still not au fait with it,but then we are not all masters.

Avatar of bastiaan

I think it's really logical to not know it for a long time, it doesn't happen every game. It doesn't seem logical at once either.
And I think clever chess players can also be clever enough to know if there is something a player doesn't know, he doesn't have to know that he is missing something. Accusing him for not reading the rules is a bit silly.

Haha! This is so funny! Tongue out

I was taught the "en passant" (or "ang pang sang" as it is pronounced in Norwegian) by Frode, I didn't believe him but he insisted that it was true! So, for years I thought he's cheated me, but a month ago (when I came to this site) I saw it in the a tutorial... That's fail! Embarassed

How can you know if you don't know a rule. If you did you'd probably go find out

Avatar of goldendog

Maybe I'm just a neurotic preparer but if I came to a site to play their game I'd read the rules of the game beforehand.

Oh no, not this again. This has been explained to you a few times before. You really are here it seems to just cause trouble.
