Resolved: 'computer thinking'....

Hi, when playing versus computer, it always sticks at 'computer thinking' on computers 2nd shot.

I believe my Java to be uptodate.  Any advice?

(Only started playing here today, so apologies if this is a known issue or I'm being daft.  Couldn't find an answer anywhere. Prefer to play versus computer for now as I'm a tad rusty).

Thanks

Well, if you are playing against the computer on Live Chess, then I would suggest you going to the Chat Rooms on Live Chess and going into the Help and Support Live Chess room, where you can talk to a staff member, or a moderator. If you are not playing against the computer on Live Chess, then I would suggest you using this link to fill out a report to contact Chess.com:

http://support.chess.com/Tickets/Submit

Tell them what is happening and give them the link to the place where you played against the computer, so they can look at it. Also, just update your Java to make sure you are up to date. If it freezes, then you probably need to update your computer, clear your history to make the Internet run faster, and/or update some software on your computer. I hope I can help!

Thanks for the reply Bluegator :)

Not sure what 'live chess' is specifically. Signing in via FB with play options being blitz chess, online chess, computer chess.   (Eventually I'll get round to reading more of what's available).
Java up-to-date and laptop kept clean & fresh for general gaming elsewhere...I'll log it using the link you provided.

cheers

When you next go into computer chess, look on the bottom right corner of your monitor. Can you click on the java icon then Open Control Panel.

Once this is open, use the bottom box where it says 'Settings'  - when that new box opens, click where it says 'delete files'.
Then OK

Once you've done this, refresh the page.

Sometimes the java icon is turned off from appearing in the tray.  If you're running windows....

start button/control panel/java/advanced/miscellaneous/check box "Place icon in system tray"

Also try clearing your cache, and even your java cache. see: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml

if that doesn't work, click on the board and then type in "version" and tell me what numbers come up. :)

Thanks, I saw that advice in the FAQ section and deleted files.  My cache is clean also.  Still sticking on the computers 2nd turn.

The board version I have up just now is: ca1.11.23-cb1.11.24-gj1.11.24

java update is good. If your pc hangs you should look after your system configuration. Maybe there are wrong settings like overclocked cpu, ram. Rectify that by setting correct defaults in Bios for instance.

It might also help trying several browsers because of incompatibility, ie is not good for chess.com i have found out ever since I use mozilla firefox its fine.

whatever the fault is have fun searching for the problem and mind correct clock of cpu an ram, overclocking is provocating many errors like blue screens, freezed mouse ect.

Safari my pref, but just tried chrome and firefox also with same scenario happening.  ie is a never for me.

Unfortunately the other language you just spoke is beyond me :p   Comp tech stuff not my forte...I can hold my own generally, but when it becomes too technical I need that step by step help.  But cheers, hopefully I'm not 'overclocking'.

I'm having the exact same problem and it just started today. Ive been a member for only about 2 weeks, really am enjoying playing and want to keep doing so. A solution to this problem would be nice.  I have tried everything listed above and I use google chrome as my browser. Please Help!!!!!!!

kohai

When it hangs, can you make a note of the notation for me please and post it on here. I can then replay those moves to see where its sticking or if there is something specific triggering it.

e4, d5, Nf3 freezes it everytime. Also on different difficulties the black pawn may move elsewhere but still freezes it up.  I am not having any problems with live chess so I can still play. Thanks for responding so quickly, you guys rock.

Just tried some different initial moves and it plays just fine.  Seems that the inital pawn is the main cause.  I just have to try a few different openings ( which is good because I need to vary my game anyway). Thanks again

Sorry :(  Looking into this for you. I've managed to replicate issues on there and taken screenshots which i have emailed to the developer.

Conflagration_Planet

My Java is updated, and it does that to me a lot too.

I'm also getting this problem but only when I am down to the last few moves of the game and the computer is losing.

kohai

Ok thanks :(  We're trying to fix it at the moment

I never thought about clearing Java's cache when having problems with java-based apps, you never know what you might learn by going thru these forums!

Same here.

We've just added a fix for the 'against the computer' issues members have been experiencing.

Can you go into computer chess, look on the bottom right corner of your monitor.

Then try 'against the computer' for me.  If you're still having issues on there can you please let me know in detail whats happening.

Thanks
