Well, you can downgrade, but it has to be after the expiration of the original subscription. Click this link to go to the Payment Policy and go under Upgrades/Downgrades at the bottom:

If you have been a diamond member for more than 30 days then you can't get your money back, but you can downgrade. You might get more than a year's gold membership depending on how much membership credit you have (e.g. if you have AU$60 of membership credit, then as gold membership is AU$30/year you would get 2 years gold membership if you decided to downgrade)
