I have no friends listed and now that I am restricted because of the Fair play law, I can't play at all. Now what do I do??? I play on other sites and this problem does not exist. They have methods for stopping a game before anyone makes a move without any penelties.  Why can't chess .com do the same? Also, I have been playing live chess on this site for years without any problems, it's only now they have done this to people.

Well, there is a group that you can join to help "cure" this restriction. It is a group called something like, "Fair Play Rehabiltation Centre." It sounds like a hospital for people with addictions. Hold on, I will get the link to the group:

Just add some members of the group to be friends with you, so now you will have players to play with you. I would suggest looking at their ratings before adding them. If you haven't been affected by the update, then I would Contact Chess.com, just to be sure this isn't a mistake. Some players haven't been affected by the update to the Fair Play Policy because they have gone overboard with their aborting and disconnecting.

We're contemplating a different kind of restriction for Fair Play violations now anyway. Disallowing people to create/accept open seeks makes it too hard for them to play the games required to repair their record. Stay tuned.

"If white doesn't move in 15-20 seconds (likewise for Black's first ply), the game aborts. The player whose turn it is when the system aborts the game is the one whose Fairplay score will be affected."

This is going to destroy me. It sometimes takes 10-15 minutes for the website to find a player for me. So of course I'm browsing the web in other tabs, instead of staring at nothing. Additionaly I have the sound off, because chess doesn't need sound. Chess pieces don't need to make noise. It's impossible to listen to music with the sound on, because the chess pieces keep making annoying sounds.

I keep the chess.com tab in my peripheral vision, because there is a little loading animation when my challenge is accepted. But I frequently miss it and the games get aborted.

Chess.com could help me out a lot if I could keep all the sounds silent EXCEPT the game-starting chime.

I don't want to get banned because I don't like annoying computer chess noises.

Declining rematches has no effect on one's fair-play record.

I second this! I want to be able to hear the sound cue that a game has been found while I'm listening to music but not the "click-lick" sounds of the chess pieces moving every second!

To those who are wondering how they can "fix" the problem, I would suggest...

Short-term: Play games with your friends, without aborting/disconnecting/abandoning the games; this will improve your sportsmanship rating and ultimately lift the restriction. If you have no friends, make some. Maybe we need a support group for people with restricted accounts? :) If you don't want to make friends, you can also directly challenge other users. You just can't create/accept Open Seeks while restricted.

Long-term (after the restriction is lifted): Configure your game settings ("Game Type Settings" link below the Start Game button) to specify the ratings of someone you're actually willing to play with, and accept that rated games require some exposure to pieces of both colors. If you must play white, simply choose "Unrated: White" on the drop-list:

this is probably why i have people wanting to be my friends that i have no idea who they are...in order to get there fair play back to normal?

I knew that you didn't do something about it because you are wasting your time in this forum.

the forums are open to anyone that wants to say what they wish

I know that, but I have the right to whether I want them to post in my forums because I have the right to block them.

Hi all,

A somewhat relevant update this morning; this is from the last development blog (posted here):

Update Dec. 5, 2011: We have now permanently removed the full restriction on open seeks: Preventing people from playing was simply making it too difficult for them to make positive changes to their own Fair Play scores, and thus creating a dead end. Effective immediately, "fully restricted" members must instead wait 5 minutes between games (unless playing with Friends); this includes games that are aborted, so please read the Fair Play guidelines for tips on how to get the perfect game to begin with!

I've been flagged for "fair play" even though I'm new to the site and haven't gone on an aborting spree. Can I see my score or appeal these restrictions? I like to play chess but this site is turning me off with what seems like an arbitrary censure.

Am I just not good enough or something? Did an opponent complain about me?

I'm sorry if these questions are asked and answered elsewhere.

 - I'd also like to add that I've started many a game in good faith many times where someone else has aborted it, leaving me frustrated and unable to play chess!

Is this counting against me? If so, that is very unfair.

If you haven't been doing any of the things listed in the policy then you probably will do best to open a ticket.

I completely agree with thegodfather. Players should definintely be given the right to abort games.
