They want a credit card for a couple of things.

1.) It helps to ensure that the same person doesn't open new accounts every 10 days and be able to have a free paid membership indefinitely.

2.) If you decide you like the features on the paid membership, then you don't have to do anything to keep it.  After 10 days, the site will charge your card automatically to continue your membership.  If you don't want this to happen, you need to cancel the membership before the 10 days are up.  If you miss the 10 day deadline, you should still be able to get a full refund if it is still within 30 days.

The ten days are free, the card number if for a month membership once the ten days are up.  If you cancel it before the ten days are up then they wont charge your card.  No harm, no foul to them. But make sure it says that somewhere before giving them your card number.  Otherwise you might be paying for a 40 day month. They are finding new ways to get money from us , it's getting downright tacky the way they go about it.

Netflex did the same to me, gave me 30 days free, took my card number for the month after in case I decided to keep it, I did in this case. Be sure it says you can cancel before the ten days are up and they they wont charge your card before doing anything.

It's free but you have to enter your credit card details.

Read the fine print.

And. . .may I ask

If you are a paid member, why should Chess.com all of the sudden offer you a 10 days free membership?

And why he or she and not you or me?

Is it aleatory? . Or do you have to have some merits (which?) to be granted that prize?
