According to the chess.com message, I am friends with Benjamin Finegold. However, when I went through my friend list via https://www.chess.com/friends, I did not see him. I think this is somewhat related to the discrepancy of the number of my followers and friends (I have 46 followers but only 42 friends)

You're showing in his list. It could just be a delay but I know there are some friend related bugs, mostly around removing them though.
That said, people can follow you without being your friend so a difference in those is not uncommon.
