I'm not sure, maybe both...
hey, do moderators answer our questions here?

Hi! Moderators and staff can answer questions just about anywhere. I can help! You can send me a private message or let me know!
Boy, @Brenda had the brilliant opportunity to be Spock, in the episode, "Logic", and answer "no". What a missed opportunity.

I just want to know......was OD started BY members.....as a result of Staff's punitive measures to the main forums?........OR...... was it started BY Staff as a result of member's behaviour..? Its YOUR site......and your bandwidth that's getting used for B.S. I know Staff bailed 6 months ago......could you have at least left us a broom to clean up nonsense threads.? Its more like Facebook meets Yahoo. Talk about minutia The last thing in the world they talk about is anything "controvercial". It had always been a rough & tumble bar.....but you could go in......swear up a storm.....and talk about religion....sex....& politics. Now we get "power2people" posting music. You can post that shit in the main forums. I'm a musician......I don't wanna go to a group or a club and be angry before I get there!
This is why Off-Topic, and Open Discussion does not work, and people continue to post stuff they know they shouldn't in the main forums. The "Look at me" factor is much higher here. If you want to stand out, you don't do it by hanging out with others just like you.

Is it true some will sell their own mother for a diamond membership?
I would guess that would have to be some horrible upbringing to do that, but i guess its a possibility.
Next.
Interesting you answered two of Postafi's question's and only one of Lorgish's.
He first offered an fact, and then a question.
Fixed it for ya

What is the proper way to report a post that includes a link to illegally download copyrighted material?
I submitted a help ticket for it but that was Monday morning - it is now Thursday morning. I even asked in the help ticket if there was a better way to report it. No response at all yet and the link is still there.
Apparently chess.com no longer cares about posting of illegal stuff in their forums. Good to know. Maybe I should start posting the copyrighted material I find here all over the internet.

Here's the link: https://support.chess.com/customer/portal/emails/new
Also, several moderators are tracking this thread, so you could put a link in here: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/off-topic/if-you-are-missing-your-thread.
BTW, I personally removed a bunch of links to pirated copyright material the other day. We can't be everywhere on the site, but we can deal with things as we find them or they're reported to us.
Also, illegal copyright material is one of the few instances in which staff will interfere in private club matters. Usually that's left to the club admins, but not if it's illegal content or extreme cases of harassment or abuse.

Yup, that is the way I reported it. Like I said, reported Monday morning, have not been contacted since then (like the auto-reply email suggested, 24-48 hours) and nothing has been done about it.
"We can't be everywhere on the site, but we can deal with things as we find them or they're reported to us."
I understand, that is why I report it as I find it. It would be different if I just saw it and then complained it does not get removed.

As a former moderator i will answer your questions....go...
Hi IMBacon, so there are moderators on here but are there any mediators?

Officially...No. But i'm sure anyone could "mediate"something between others if they so wished.

I heard of this "pirated copyrighted material" but since it's the EU not America why are you removing American's posts?

Is it still there?

Chess.com is based in the U.S., so anything copyright in the U.S. and shared without permission of the copyright holder would need removed.
There are some differences in copyright laws in different countries, so there are some things that are public domain in the U.S. but under copyright elsewhere; those might be allowed to stand, but since chess.com doesn't currently have a way to restrict access to specific posts to certain countries they might end up being removed too. But that's a rare situation that won't happen very often, if ever.

There is a club that was set up for the purpose: https://www.chess.com/club/mediation-and-arbitration
They've handled one or two disputes and were able to calm things down satisfactorily, as far as I know.

That gives me an idea to start a chess.com "Peoples Court" Except with a Supreme Court type setup.
People can bring their cases to us.
That means you want macer, right? Or is he an undercover hasbeen?
