Ok.. I don't know what happened but I updated other information in my profile then it allowed me to change my username.. Phew!

Just write a mail to site staff at support@chess.com requesting a username change, and they'll do it for you, if possible.
I just cleared my status and it worked for me if that doesn't work then I have no idea.

I ensure that I am not into Live Chess. But how to ensure I am not registered to any Live Chess Competition? I don't even remember registering to any such competition and I'm unable to track them on my profile either.

I encountered the same problem and turned to this platform for assistance. I'd like to share what ultimately resolved the issue for me. Initially, I attempted the basic troubleshooting step of logging out and logging back in after checking the information provided here. However, this didn't yield the desired results.
Then, I took a slightly different approach specifically for the website Chess.com. I decided to clear the cache and cookies associated with the site. After completing this step, I attempted the process again, and to my delight, it worked flawlessly. I was finally able to successfully change my username. It's worth noting that once you do make the change, there's a waiting period of around three months before you can alter it again. Therefore, when you do decide on a new username, it's wise to choose carefully to avoid any regrets later on. Hope this helps.

Had same trouble. Cleared Cookies Logged out. Closed Browser. Opened Browser. Logged back in.

If you keep getting that, close out of all other tabs and log out. Log back in and immediately change your username.

If you're account is connected to your facebook, link your account via email and disconnect your account with your facebook.

Ok so here is what you do. Log into firefox. click on settings as soon as you are in chess.com, then change your profile pic first, after that click on change username. It will work.

I also got it to work after switching to Firefox.
This probably won't work for everyone, but I was able to change my username by going to settings instead of profile. When I went to profile and clicked change username, I received the message everyone else got every single time. However, for some reason going into settings and clicking the link took me to the change username page.
