I was promised no ads...

When I purchased Diamond Membership I was promised no ads.

Today I logged in, and a message advertising stuff from http://www.wholesalechess.com popped up - fullscreen - before I could do anything else.

Had to delete it first to get to my stuff. Very annoying. Since it's delivered from Chess.com my adblocker doesn't get it either.

On http://www.chess.com/membership? it clearly states that you won't get ads when you pay for membership.

What is wrong here?

That has never happened to me with my Platinum membership, and I, too, use Adblock (for Chrome). Sounds like you might have a spyware or malware issue on your P.C. - Not a chess.com problem, but a problem on your end. You might tell us about your operating system and browser and when you last cleaned your internet cache.

Chessman265

Same. I have no ads. Might want to run a malware detection program.

You might also want to keep in mind that "no ads" means "no ads that pop up during your games from external advertisers" - you will still get the chess.com messages about the Chess.com University Program that could be interpreted as "ads", as well as the text banner pointing out other partner sites. There was a discussion about this in another thread.

NomadicKnight

You get a banner ad for partner sites? I don't. Then again, on this latest installment of Adblock for Chrome, it's blocked over 221,611 ads in about 3 months, and it says it's blocking 6 on this page right now...

NomadicKnight

Just paused Adblock and reloaded browser and this page... Still no ads. So dunno what it's blocking, but it wasn't a banner ad or anything that wasn't already displayed on this page such as the social media buttons...

##Edit: By 'Inbox' i mean that I get PM's.

It was not an ad in the sense that there is a banner somewhere.

It was spam in my inbox from Chess.com itself advertising this partner site.

Yesterday I got another one from Chess.com in my inbox:

"Chess.com is missing some people - your friends!

... Either way, do them a favor and invite them over! Click here (http://www.chess.com/home/invite_friends) to send a short message to them just one time - we will not store their email address or info."

So basically they encourage me to recruit some other players for them. Not saving their email addresses - of course. O.o

Usually a site gives you some kind of kickback when you spam your friends for them and they actually sign up. Not the case here.

I thought with a Diamond Membership they monetized enough from me, and I am glad with the provided content here, I think it's worth it.

My problem starts with logging in here, finding begging-mails from the site provider itself. I think it's very low of them.

NomadicKnight

You sure you didn't inadvertently sign up for something or click some option in your account settings?

I've never once, even for the months I was a non-paying member, received any such message.

I guess your fix might be filing a support ticket and asking them to knock it off or tell you what option to unclick gets you out of receiving such messages.

David

@NomadicKnight: Are you sure you just didn't delete the message when it appeared and haven't thought about it since?

This sort of advertising isn't the sort of thing Chess.com means when they say "no ads" - see my initial post. They clearly feel that if you think that it's worth paying for premium membership here that you might also be inclined to invite some of your friends to join the site as well. I think the comments from other members indicate that they won't do this very often, so it's not like they're spamming your Inbox with 10 messages a day or anything like that.

He's not talking about the pop-up ads that basic members get and premium members don't: he's talking about the PMs that Chess.com send that could be interpreted as advertising, but which aren't what is meant when Chess.com says "no ads" for Premium members. Adblock isn't going to help with those.

I really hate advertising. Rsava is not totally wrong. :-D

Just so you get the picture: I have a Raspi running Squid with DNS-Blocklists against ads. So that any device in my LAN has no ads without installing bockers on each one of them. Works quite fine agianst most ads. As soon as the site itself hosts them you need Element Hider for Adblock or something similar.

So yes, I'm on a bit of e vendetta. Thank you for all the replies and explanations. We can close this one.

Just for fun, you might want to take a look at this web site...Everything is self-hosted, no 3rd party ads. I don't think adblockers will help you with this one. (Warning - Don't visit this site if you might be subject to epileptic seizures. Surprised)
