What I don't understand is, do you have to write in your CC number?

No you have to type in your number. They want you to give them your card number so you will hopefully either forget you gave it to them or it's too much trouble to cancel your membership. If they really wanted to give a FREE trial then they would do it without strings attached.

Wait and listen to the replies to this thread and then ask yourself if you really want to be part of such a community.

How annoying.. you guys are basically fighting for your rights to get everything on this site for free AND not have someone try and make u pay for it. I wasnt a paying member for a long time and I never tried the free trail I dont see what the big deal is. Also, you're saying they arnt trying to give u a free trail?? its still free for those 7 days. if u dont want it then dont sign up for it!

i dont know which planet you've been living on but this is how ALL online free trails work..

J_Piper

Nothing today is "free" without giving information first.  That's just the way promoting works.

I am fortunate that chess.com lets me have as much fun as I'm having for free.  I should be thanking the members who pay who keep this site running.

Troglodyte , only someone who lacks education would make such a comment. I think it’s great that you can escape your pitiful world of servitude and try and bully those who choose to really be free. I refuse to be a PAYING member to a group of people who do not stand up to those that oppress such as you. Before you put us all in a barrel why not try and think before you respond. I am not trying to get a free trial, I am supporting the subject of this forum. Go back and read the topic before stating your case. It's people like you that have caused the problems with our economy, world social statues and global warming. You think it's OK to take as much as you want as long as people keep letting you. This site to me is great as a free site but I feel THEY will have to offer a lot more in order for me to pay for it. You know television started this way. Free viewing as long as they could put commercial on in between the shows but, have you noticed that you pay for cable and you still have the commercials. One day you will wake up and see that you are fighting against yourself and wish that us few trolls were still around.

Isn't funny how only paying zombies make such comments. Read books instead of listening to them curmudgeon.

You had better be careful!  She has already "proven" her point by calling one person with whom she disagreed a "troglodyte" and those of us who choose to spend our money supporting this site "zombies."  What if she were to call you a name?  You know how devastating that would be.

if you don't understand the reason for asking for the credit card info, take a few seconds to think about it. :)

first off, what would prevent someone from just continually signing up over and over again and abusing the system?

secondly, if you aren't willing to put in your credit card for the trial, what are the chances that you are really interested in getting a membership? slim to none. so there is no reason to offer you the free trial.

finally, there is really nothing on this site that you can experience with the free trial that you can't taste without it (except for the ads). we give trials, tests, and demos of everything.

Thank you Lucena, I will take that as a flattering remark. I have found in my experience that reactionary people are not looking out for the consumer’s wellbeing, they are only looking out for themselves and what gains can be made from it, hence reactionary. If you blamelessly walk through the vast catechisms of life then you are surely asking for a consequence, and then you will want me to reach out my hand and help and I probably will.

So when are you going to run out of Thesaurus room you egocentric faux-erudite?

Also I point you to http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/reactionary where you apparently infer that an extreme conservative looks out for themselves only when a true reactionary is usually looking to return things to a previous system.

chess.com is a great site.  I plan on upgrading my account very soon.  It is the best  chess site out there.

As much as it pains me to respond to such illogical remarks, Popinjay, you said "This site to me is great as a free site but I feel THEY will have to offer a lot more in order for me to pay for it. "  Can you please give us a list of examples of what we'd have to add in order for you to pay for it? that'd be great! thanks :)

I thought maybe we might have lucked out and covered those other things when we built all the features listed on our site map.  Am I missing something or is there some other chess site out there that is offering more than we are for less? or for free? Please help...I'm confused.

Scarblac

I would love an anti-addiction feature. I have a history of Internet addiction in various forms, and the way it's going, perhaps I shouldn't stay on chess.com for long.

On the other hand, if you could make it so that I could only login between some times I could set, protected with a separate password (so only my girlfriend has it)...

It's a bit of an odd feature, and I'm sure it's not what the masses would like to see first, but I promise to pay if you do happen to implement it :-)

Chess.com is a great platform, and is better constructed than most of the other chess sites I've visited.  The real catch 22 is that the site still has a lot of bugs, and its hard to justifiy paying for a site that continously crashes, while on the other hand, it's hard to expect to get all of the bugs worked out w/ no $$$ coming in.  That's my dilema anyway.
