Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site....

For a couple weeks now, I have been getting errors like this:

"Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://www.chess.com/echess/myhome.html.

Operation aborted."

Then it shows an "OK" button.

"Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://www.chess.com/livechess/myhome.html.

Operation aborted."

With another "OK" button.

And now, another error as I post this help topic:

"Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://www.chess.com/forum/post.html?cat_id=12

Operation aborted."

Also, with an "OK" button.

After hitting OK when the errors come up, chess.com runs normal and the errors aren't stopping chess.com from running or causing it to close, but it is getting annoying. Also, it doesn't happen every time--it happens randomly. Sometimes I get the error, sometimes I don't.  Fortunately it doesn't happen during live chess.

The only thing I can think of regarding this error, is that recently I let my paid subscription run out (times are tough for me financially at present). So, I'm not sure whether it has to do with the advertisements that now show up.

I have never had this type of error before, even before I had my paid membership.

Windows XP SP3; i7 CPU; 3GB ram; Internet Explorer 8

PS  It would help if chess.com posted the recommended settings for cookies, pop-ups, etc, so i could go through those settings to see if they are set up correctly.

Hi, I am not part of the website stuff.

I run some google search on your error message and it seams that probably the problem can be :

1. Your Flash. Try unistall it and make a fresh installation.

2. Some weird stuff going on with adds and javascripts. On this case you can disable active scripting and scripting of JAVA appas. This may interfere with the funstioning of other websites, so if going to try this do it as a rule for the website, like in restric websites lists. Thie ideal would be to have the webmaster to modify the script code to prevent this to happend (that is what my uinterent research says).

3. something going on with toolbars and updates as this link says:

And the list keep going on... Maybe the faster fix is to get firefox and use it for the websites that IE give you problems with.

IE = Internet Explorer

The sugestions is use a diferent browser, like firefox or chrome.

I use IE8.

Now to answer why I preffer IE better than other browsers, it is becouse it is the one I understand the better. Still It is far away from perfect.

IE run and install programs or apps on the backgrond whithout letting the user know about that (this is the big point of firefox agains IE, of course for those who knows and disable the microsoft update on firefox). It Also have, and this is, I consider the bigest problem, integration with the windows explorer. That is the program that browse the web share functions with the program that browse the folders or files. So if a virus infect the IE it may affect the browsing of files. Alongside with this there is some nasty things, like that "Bing" navigation bar forced on everybody and imposible to unistall (another new microsoft update on firefox was this Bing stuff), almost imposible to disable.

Still, I have found that IE propertly set up and in company of an antivirus and firewall works just fine. Archiving this same level of tune up in firefox may be more complicated (for me), still maybe it worth it. I use Firefox, basically, to troubleshut IE, And in some cases to browse some "complicate" websites that give me random errors that I can't figure out differently.

If your computer savvy enough to made an ID here and post a topic, then surely you're savvy enough to know that no one (other than my grandma who calls google "googles") uses IE.

I don't know if i'm "computer savvy" but I have been around computers my whole life, so I know a thing or two about them. Probably the main reason why I use IE, is because I've never had any reason to switch. It's never given me any problems. I think there are many people out there that just "like to be different", and will switch away from something (like IE) just because it's what everyone else uses. I'm not like that. As long as IE works, I have no reason to switch to another browser. And there is nothing to suggest that using IE is the cause of the problem.

I had thought that the error issue was a result of my membership expiring and i was curious if anyone else had a similar issue (if their membership expired), and how they resolved it.

jason, it looks like you chose to turn off auto renewal on the premium membership so when the time came to renew, it wasn't done manually and reverted back to a basic account 27th January 2012

IE still one of the most used browsers with 30 of each 100 people using it:

I think part of this is that Windows still a very popular OS, and it is what companies have on their PCs, and it is what ready come preinstalled on the cheap WallMart PCs, and it is what they teach to kids on school... so most of the people takes what it comes with windows and never bother to find something else, perhaps better.

Notice Windows Users Total is arround the 80% while the IE total is arround 30%

Yeah, I let the membership expire, because at present I can't afford to renew. However, this is not the issue.

The issue is the error messages that are occuring. I started getting the error messages around the same time that my paid membership expired, reverting back to a basic membership.

So, I was curious if having reverted back to a basic membership (with ads now appearing) is part of what is causing the error messages, and whether anyone else experienced the same problem (and how they fixed it).
