Is it possible to add time stamping to Live Chess games?

Keep in mind that while some staff may (or may not) see these posts, it still may not be the right staff for the question.  Although the forum is called help/support it's not a direct communication link with staff.  Almost all interaction in all the threads in this forum is just among members.

Well, I have gotten answers to my questions in various forums, and always in the Help and Support forum, particularly from kohai, a very helpful person who is signed in right now. This silence is definitely different. I don't know.

If you report a problem via the Help & Support category, you are likely to get a quick response (though not not necessarily a quick fix).

However, if you enquire about a possible future feature - which belongs in the Site Feedback & Suggestions category - you are less likely to get a response from chess.com staff.

They receive a large quantity of such ideas. Eric has stated that if they replied to them individually, there would be significantly less time to actually implement new features.

just my thought here: there is no way you can compare this website to the Playstation game.

That makes sense. Thank you. You are right, in that I am not complaining about a problem with a current feature in Live Chess, but complaining about a feature that I think should be in Live Chess. I'm sure there are others out there who would like to see this or that improvement in Live Chess. In that regard, I am not alone.

However, I am surprised that time stamping is not a feature in Live Chess, as it is a common feature found at other chess sites, and I see it as a not asking for the moon feature to add to a software chess clock. I feel like the software engineer just forgot to add it. It's strange.

I played the XBOX 360 version of Call of Duty. The servers for the XBOX are better and faster than the ones for the Playstation Network. I know, as I own both systems, and logged hundreds of hours of online play with each one, as well as my boys. The Playstation Network is free, and that is my guess as to why it is slower than Xbox Live, which is not free.

Anyway, what do you mean by, not being able to compare this website to the Playstation game

Hm yes, it would be a nice feature to have. One thing is, the time the server registered might be significantly different from the time you were seeing on your clock, so perhaps it might not help with time management skills too much.

But the difference in time between two moves should be close enough to be useful. Doesn't really matter if it exactly matches what you see on the clock.

For the shortest games, sure, but then there's not really all that much time management involved in those.  For the longer games the time difference shouldn't be a problem-- in a 30 minute game you could still how many moves you played in the 1st 10 minutes, or which move you spent 6 minutes on and still reached the wrong conclusion, etc.

However, as has been pointed out this feature request has been brought up many times over the lifespan of chess.com without apparently ever even meriting a response, let alone any form of implementation, so it must rate as non-existent as far as an item on a to-do list.

I'm not sure I follow. Are you saying, for example, that I see 10:30 left on the clock after my 15th move (G15), and when reviewing the game, move 15 gets stamped with the time of 10:25 because of a 5 second lag?

If that is the case, it doesn't sound like a big deal, since every move will get stamped 5 seconds late, still giving me what I need, which is the amount of time I spend per move.

All of this is so simple to see on both ICC and ChessCube. It's a great feature. I learn a lot about how I use my time in the opening, and during deep thinks. I like it. Smile

I frankly don't understand why chess.com doesn't have time stamping. It's mystifying. It's like visiting a place to play internet chess where there are no ratings, or something equally unusual.

Chess.com quickly established itself as the best web-based live playing venue. Competing with server-based live chess requires quite a bit more. For an old, out of date, but still insightful summary of the differences, see Yahoo vs. the Chess Servers. Comparing he features here to ICC is comparing kiwi fruit to bananas.

Of course, Chess.com is vastly superior to Yahoo, but the limitations of website based play still apply.

I support this idea entirely. I have often thought about it, but never really knew what it should be called.

Excellent article. Thank you. I have never played on FICS, which has Timeseal. Something to check out.

http://www.edcollins.com/chess/yahoo-vs-servers.htm

"While playing, is there a method to help fight against Internet "lag" so that I'm not penalized for a slow connection?

The servers have a way to help fight against Internet lag. This is a program, built right into most interfaces, known as Timeseal on FICS and Timestamp on ICC.  Once you make your move it is "stamped" with the current time. This way if it takes a moment or two to reach its destination, it can be proven that you actually made this move when you did. Yahoo! offers nothing in the way of this."

i think we should go a step further and update the pgn format entirely to include timestamps. i have watched countless video lectures that speculate about whether the players were under time pressure or not. with time (an important factor in competitive chess) becoming a standard part of chess-move notation we could be more accurate about the logging, sharing, and understanding of competitive games.

That is an excellent idea. When I watch Dan Heisman go over ICC member games, he has in front of him the exact time each move was played, because all games at ICC are time stamped.

He will comment on such things as "this player is not using all of his time", or "this guy is playing too fast on a critical move", things like that.
