I am staying out of this arguement. But I would like to say that I am using WinXP 32 bit with Firefox and the latest update from Java and everything works perfectly! NOTE: It absolutely WILL NOT WORK with IE 8.

I'm using the same browser and Java update but I'm also unable to play the computer, tried the edit sit list but no change, like most people it used to work and I've made no changes to my system.

Lennymac1,

As oska1234 mentioned above, you have to:

Find the "Configure java" program. (The program is easy to find in windows 7 - press the windows/start button, - and write "java" in the search field). "Configure java" should be one of the options that appear.

Run  (click) "configure java"

select "security"

select "edit site list"

select "add"

and type "http://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com

--------------------------------------------------------

Note: you can not copy & paste this text into the Add program to configure Java. You must write it down (or copy & paste it into an email) then open up the configuration as mentioned above and go to secruity and then click on Add and manually type the address in.

Thank you oska1234 !

This isn't relevant to the OP who appears to be using a PC, but for mac users, the latest Java update requires a 64 bit browser.Chrome is 32 bit, but Safari is 64. My understanding (correct me if I am wrong) is that recent mac os updates blocked the older java plug-ins from functioning because they aren't secure. Maybe the same thing is true of windows?

You are mistaken when you say the lastest Java requires a 64 bit browser!

I use WinXP and d/led the latest 32 bit browser and it works fine with Firefox.

when will the chess.com team sign this applet ? It is now a prereq to run applet java, so go update this applet and stop asking users to add security exceptions !

Avatar of EyeGore

Still waiting for a signed version of the applet...

You can set your security to not require a signed certificate. You might think that would allow hackers to get past your security, but it is only relevant to the sites that you visit. Turn off that feature and see if that was the problem (?)

I'm having the same problem.  I've added lots of java exceptions, but no luck.

I had the same problem today (started play on chess.com yesterday night), but solved it today.

Find the "Configure java" program. (The program is easy to find in windows 7 - press the windows/start button, - and write "java" in the search field). "Configure java" should be one of the options that appear.

I was playing the computer chess just fine until 3/8/2014 on medium security and now it says it is block by my computer. It looks like Chess.com is refusing to be humble enough to take the necessary steps to move forward and is in deed taking two steps back. Why sooo high brow?

I use medium security and it works fine with Firefox. Maybe the issue is that you have to have a certain level membership to use that feature?

FINALLY - DI's suggestion above - add http://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com to Java security worked. Well done DI

In the part of the World that I live in, adding the site to the java security list doesn't fix anything, because our security systems will only trust website without the http security certification. Chess.com is viewed as an unknown source.

Click on the peice of paper to the left of the web address in the browser address area. This will show you the information about the web site and allow you to change a few settings. It won't help in the United States, but it might in other countries.

Hey! its just NSA taking control over chess.com too as they did with facebook... http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-nsa-posing-facebook-malware-20140312,0,3491724.story#axzz2vtUeQyHR... :(

Ok, I am just kidding... but seriously! when is chess.com going to solve it for us or at least officially let us know what causes this problem? try vs computer is a nice feature but unfortunately I could not use it yet even though I have paid for it...

chess.com need to stop using Java.

It doesn't work on Chrome OS or Android. I might pay for a membership if they were Java free.

Or if they had a cut price membership that explicitly excluded the Java features, I'd go for that, probably.

I don't really want to play the computer *that* much, but I'm not paying for a system in which some basic features don't work because they need an old, insecure programming language that has been condemned by Google and security experts.

Actually - keep using Java, it makes me feel less guilty about using the great features for free!

I would bet money that you have not even bothered to apply the fix!

I'm Using Chrome Version Version 33.0.1750.154 m
Java is up to date, even re-installed it.

Very odd.  I have Windows 7 64-bit and those are the same settings I am using and it works for me.  I do have to answer a security prompt, though.

What happens when you try www.java.com/verify ?
