Aquititan, fcbaird,ParisPete thanks for your comments.  I was wrong in my earlier post http://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/java-computer-doesnt-work?quote_id=17618234&page=6#last_comment

(as I discovered when testing the chessplaying computer).

Adding http://www.chess.com/  to the permitted sites list in Java is an important first step, but it does not fix everything.

When I played against the computer I got an error message.  Clicking on 'Details' I got the further message (in French since my computer is French):

L'application est bloquée même si le site hôte du fichier html situe à l'emplacement http://ww.chess.com/play/computer?pop=. [snip] est inclus dans la liste d'exception car l'application fait référence a des ressources sur plusieurs domaines.

Le fichier jnlp situe à l'emplacement

http://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com/assets/java/vscomp/ChessApplet.jnlp

est sur un autre domaine et n'est pas inclus dans la liste des sites avec exception.

So I added the site http://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com/ and tried again.  This time I got a different error message (in English this time)

RuntimeException

java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

About here I gave up.  I think that the problems may have multiple causes:

(a) use of programs from more than one site; and

(b) [speculation] a problem somehow related to language.

This may be very difficult for chess.com to bottom out.

Hope this extra information contributes to finding a solution

 Cheers David

Here is my solution!

Pretty hopeless - won't work on Firefox or IE. But it does work on my tablet, so must be a combination of Java, Chess.com and maybe Windows Firewall. So at least until Chess.com fixes their certificate, sparkchess.com seems to be a good alternative - thanks FCB

Up to yesterday I was able, in chess mentor, to play the position against the computer, clicking allow the blocked application and accepting the risk. I go to sleep last night at 22:08, nobody entered my house or did anything, and this morning BOOM, I cannot use anymore the engine to play chess positions against, because during the night, also if nobody used my computer, magically happened that the application has been blocked by security settings (that I didn't change before to go to sleep).

Here the details, and the pic, did it happened to anyone else?

Indeed I already added http://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com/ to the trusted sites which fixed the playing vs computer issue, but not the "Computer workout" issue, I'm starting to think that it has something to do with the version of JQuery used and/or some compatibility issues related to that.. probably they need to upgrade their code which may be the cause why they're taking so long to fix this problem...

I was about to post the same thing, this is not professional, if we want to be ignored we can go to Microsoft Customer Service.

I assume everyone that wants to is using the work around but why should ppl be forced to take a security risk?

Dear chess.com

I realize there is a problem concerned with java and the computer systems you are using. This disables both the ''computer workout'' and ''vs computer'' features for PC users. Players can face computers via the seek option, but personally, I believe these computers ( of all levels ) behave in a weak way. Since ,of course, i can't play against computers in the vs computer option, i can't tell if there would be any difference. Computer workout tool is still 100% unavailable though.

If you can't fix the problem, at least let us know if there is any third-party program you could suggest.

I've been away from the site for a few days and now...it seems to work fine.  I have no idea why.

Avatar of jomtiensoi9

So you can play against computer now? wow that is weird no one else seems to be able to...no probs with Java?

Avatar of michales

The computer workout works now. Nice.

Avatar of QueenTakesKnightOOPS

It still isn't working for me unless I lower the security level. I checked for updates, latest Java installed still no Computer Chess unless I set security to medium

Yes, it seems to be working fine now. No problems.

So it is over a month and there is no resolution to the Jave/play against computer issue.  Is Chess.com working on a solution?

If I can not play against the computer, Chess.com losses much of its appeal as far as I am concerned. Is anything being done? The solutions published in the forum do not work.

If no response within a week, I leave this site without serious assistance.

In my opinion, chess.com is great for playing with real humans. If you need to practice with the computer you can always download some of the programs which are given freely on the site. For example Arena is great, especially using the Houdini engine. I don't see what's all the fuzz about a crappy java chess program.

I was originally interested about the computer workout problems, but those seem to work perfectly now.

ps: I can play versus the computer from my mobile. Won it a couple of times, so it can't be that good.

Hmm, so I was able to update the java configuration to allow both http://www.chess.com and http://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com, and now instead of the security error, I get an error in java.lang.reflection.InvocationTargetException

This kind of thread usually runs in cycles (of course nobody reads from the start).
