hmm well if you use google-chrome browser no need to download java as is integrated into chrome.

If another you need to delete all trace/log files for java via the control-panel/java/settings on your PC. Also need to enable java-plugins for the browser they may be getting blocked by a security-program.

Thanks for helping  I appreciate it, I have downloaded google chrome and restarted computer tried to play chess vs computer but now I'm getting the message Java needs your permission and instead of trying to load as besfore i have a small outline of a jigaw piece in the centre of the screen ...... Any ideas ?

hmm unusual but that (jigsaw-piece) is normally to do with adobe-flash-player ? (also integrated with chrome)

certainly tick any permissions asked for running especially first-time ?

if not needed for anything else (other-gaming sites mostly) you could try uninstalling java from your PC ? (can always re-install later if reqd:)
