I suggest using something like Javascript blocker and block the excessive scripts from Facebook, Twitter, Addthis, Optimizley, and Google that are on the live chess pages. You should see a performance increase and less load on your cpu.
How old is your laptop battery? Batteries will acquire more internal 'resistance' as they age, and as they age they tend to heat up when the batteries are in use, or, when being charged.
Try removing the battery and using a plug-in power source to see if it makes a big difference. If it does, it's getting about time for a new battery imo.

i noticed my mackbook pro overheats with >70% cpu usage in live chess. by comparison i can play a movie on itunes (>30%) or watch an HD video on youtube and it's fine.
any advice?
