Your rating addition/subtraction depends on your rating and the tactics problem rating.
EXAMPLE- your rating is 1682 and you fail a tactic that is 1290-1399, you might get I'd say 15-25 points taken away

This answer makes sense, but, is not the Tactics Trainer supposed to adjust the difficulty of the problems to my current rating? I was rated 2577. Now I am rated 2188. Tactics Trainer should be giving me tactics around 2188 instead of around 2577. Why when I solve a problem at around 2188 does it only give me 1 point? It seems that the Tactic Trainer still thinks I am still at 2577 and should have easily solved a problem ranked at around 2188, so it gives me only one point. If it continues this way, I will never recover my previous rating.
Yeah sometimes it messes up and gives you low rated problems. Don't know the solution.
I know resetting your score solves some issues around problem selection (duplicates).
yeah just like Live Chess, If I set my paremeters to +-200 rating points, it always matches me up with someone rated like 150 lower, and if I lose I lose like 15+ points and a win only gives like 2~3.
but Judging by your Online Chess rating, 2200 Tactics seems like the right place for you. Don't lose heart, rating is just a number and Tactics rating here is insignificant compared to everyday life.
This is absurd. I have now lost about 600 points. I am getting tactics rated at 1600 or 1700 which is still 300 or 400 points lower than my Tactics Trainer rating. I get one point for a correct response and I lose 40 points for an incorrect solution. Even if I only miss 1 out of 40 problems, my rating will never improve. I know I am not a great chess player but not even I am this bad. I don't believe my Online rating has anything to do with my Tactics Trainer rating. I believe something is wrong with the Tactics Trainer. I also do not wish to reset my rating. I have built it up for the past three years from 1700 to 2575, and although to some its just a number, it means something to me. I posted this in the help and support forum hoping that someone from the staff would respond. Is no one else having this problem?
The tactics trainer on this site is completely messed up. I use the tt on chesstempo and guess what, that one is messed up too! And don't even ask about the one on emrald, can't even get into that one due to a password glitch. Why can't they get these tt's to work right?

That's an adjustable setting.
Good luck to you battling back to 2500, Rover-Q. You are a better man than I. I have done 25 problems every day for three years at this site, nearly 25000 problems, but I quit until this is resolved. If it were not for the Chess Mentor, I would cancel my subscription to this site and just read books again.
Well, I've looked at the problems. On your tactics trainer proformance page, there is a key to view all problems. Click there. Then, you will see a graph displaying at what rating are problems most common. There are very few problems at 2000+.

1 point for a correct solution vs 40 lost for an incorrect solution is the only thing that makes sense for problems many hundreds of points below your rating. It seems you don't understand how ratings work.
It seems you should be complaining about how difficult 1700 rated problems are for you to solve when in the past you could easily solve 2000+ rated problems.
I do understand how ratings work. 1700-level problems are easy to solve, but I am not perfect. I solve most of them, but even if I solved say 9 out 10 correctly, I will lose 35 rating points every ten problems. I routinely do 25 to 50 problems every day, hence I am losing 50 to 100 points every day, while only missing a few problems. The problem is that Tactics Trainer is not giving me problems at the margin of my ability.

There are very few problems at 2000+. This is the proof: http://www.chess.com/tactics/problems
I think you should stop at 2577. You know you only get 1 point and lose 35. And you know you can't beat the odds 10 out of 10. You lose if you score 9 out 10. The odds is against you.
So what do you do when the the odds is against you?
1. Stop.
2. Take the chance.
Both choices are losing for you.
You just complain that you make the 2nd choice. Is it logical?

Aha, logic.
Do you want more difficult tactical problems? Then play a game against more difficult opponents. I guarantee problems that will have your head spinning.

Ring a bell?
I started out today with a Tactics Trainer rating of 2577. I finally quit after doing 40 problems as my rating had plummeted almost 400 points to 2188. Every time I missed a problem, it seemed that 30 or 40 points was subtracted from my score. Each time I answered a problem correctly only one point was added. This is very frustrating! Is something wrong with the Tactics Trainer or with me? Could someone please offer an explaination or should I just quit playing chess and take up sudoku?
