Losing a game because the opponent forced a disconnection?

Hello,

I am sure I am not the only one who has experienced this before. I was playing a live bullet game, then the connection went off for about a minute or so (on my opponent's turn). When connection was restored, his move was played and MY time had elapsed for about a minute!

Obviously I was rather annoyed by this... Is there anything in the sytem that could mitigate such disconnections properly, by not deducting time when the disconnect was actually on our opponent's turn?

Not sure if it helps but here is the game link: http://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=415639738

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah I've had that happen before as well, only a handful of times. If it was deliberate I'd say that's a sad attempt to boost a rating when rating isn't really everything.

ethermeister

OK, to avoid any misunderstanding (in case my opponent reads this)... It may be that there was a genuine reason for the disconnect. However, I do not see why the server would deduct from my time when I was waiting for the connection to be restored... Smile

Sorry, ethermeister you lost by checkmate not on time

Hi yeres30,

Fair enough, but that's not to the point... I had less than a second at that stage... So although the end result was a checkmate, the loss of time was what was behind me rushing my moves.

Had I had time to see the mating move, I would have resigned Smile

I had experienced this many times, too. and then I had this:

"Your play is restricted because you have not followed our Fair Play Policy - which prohibits stalling, abandoning games or frequently aborting. You must now wait 5 minutes between games. This restriction will be lifted automatically after a few days, or after you play several fair games"

Please remove this restriction from my account as I've never stalled a game. It was either chess.com's server disconnection that stalled my moves or poor internet connection. I usually resign when I see that I'm playing a losing game and request for rematch instead of stalling. Thanks...

  1. There is NO way your opponent can force a disconnection; it is entirely on your end.
  2. If your opponent has made his move, then it is your timer that will decay; it doesn't matter if you've lost connection, or gone to the bathroom. Those are the rules of the game.

1. So how do you know it was on my end? There was no problem whatsoever with my connectivity, I can guarantee.

2. When the application displayed the 'Attempting to re-connect' message, it was still my opponent's move.

I think it's time to remove the tin foil hat. How did your opponent make you disconnect? He bribe chess.com? It must have been your connection to the server if only you were affected.

It doesn't matter that it was your opponent's move when the re-connect message was displayed, if he made his move WHILE you were reconnecting, your timer would decay in the meantime. Btw, if my opponent disconnected, I'd make sure to make my move immediately, so he/she is penalised.

OK, so how can I make a move when the application won't let me because it is reconnecting (and when my connectivity is up)? Maybe he did manage to make a move, but how can my timer keep running when I cannot make a move or see the position?

I did not mean to accuse my opponent directly on this instance, I was just curious to see if anyone else had seen similar behaviour in the application.

In any case, thanks for the comments (and for removing the tin foil hat Wink).

Months ago, when I played my games online, the PC was freezing every 5 or 6 moves submit. I had to close the chess.com and reconnect again. I downloaded «CCleaner» (free software) and «accelerer PC» (in french) and make a good clean. Now it doesn't freeze anymore. I have Internet Explorer 8. Maybe these disconnections are due to some cookies or viruses. Or it could be the quality of the internet connexion. (in rush hours somes companies slow down the speed connexion, ex: 1MB/sec instead of 6MB/sec sometimes.

i dont know if it's just a coincidence but there have been several times when i was winning against a higher rated opponent and im relatively low on time, i happen to make a move and then it seems like my opponent is taking a while to make a move and before i know it the "disconnected, attempting to reconnect" window pops up and ive run out of time. it seems sketchy plus i have perfect internet connection. it's happen quite a few times that the last time it happened i knew what was happening and didnt get as mad as i had when it happened before.

skakmadurinn

I know exactly what you are talking about. It has happend many times for me and I hate it. I have more time and then the disconnection thing appears and I wait... and I wait... and I wait.. and then finally my opponent won on time. Damn cheaters...

Have you ever lost 3 or 5 games in a row only to be told that you are restricted for stalling a game when you haven't? I hope it will happen to you just like you're doing to my account. Or are your people inefficient?

Igorotte

Your play is restricted because you have not followed our Fair Play Policy - which prohibits stalling, abandoning games or frequently aborting. You must now wait 5 minutes between games. This restriction will be lifted automatically after a few days, or after you play several fair games

If the problem is with your internet connection, then that still falls on you. As it should.

Anarcho-punk

There are ways your opponent can force a disconnection.

1) Thread has been dead for 3 months.

2) No, short of him breaking into your ISP.

That's why I stopped playing live games...

LLChess

I agree with igorotte. I just lost to a game unfairly because of disruption of connections. Time to consider not playing live chess anymore !!! And time to avoid Chess.com, not a very good website!!!
