If you purchased originally on the website and upgrade that way, you will get credit for any unused portion of gold towards you diamond upgrade. For Android app purchases, it should credit you as well.
For iOS, it doesn't an counts as a new purchase and you have to manage your subscription; if that is your case, you might want to contact support for more detailed information: https://support.chess.com/collection/343-contact-us
