No Java, no broadband - can I still play chess?

I have an older model computer, no Java installed, and I have a slow dial-up internet connection.  I have both Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers.  I'm sure I can't play live online chess, but what about turn-based?

I played turn-based with java disabled and over dial-up. In fact I played live chess with java disabled and over dial-up, so I'm not sure what your problem is.

Only one way to find out for sure, start a game.

Yes, just ask your neighbour over for a game

When I clicked on online chess, I got a message telling me to install Java.

Why not? Java allows live chess, regardless of slow connection.

I don't have Java on my computer.  I would get it installed, except that my computer is old and has a lot of stuff on it already, and I'm afraid of crashing my hard drive if I download too much more!

Well, now you've presented me with a whole new problem - how to find a neighbor who has even the slightest interest in chess!!!

Java is used for playing against the computer. JavaScript is used in online games.

Did you try randomly mashing buttons? I know with these things I will often get an alert telling me that the software is not going to work at all unless I go and download some update and I tell it to chew off and then it works fine.

Get rid of some stuff, install necessary software for desired use.

Maybe its DOS, if its so old that Java won't fit on his hard drive... or maybe he uses floppies.

With that older javirgin computer, and that dial up, how on God's green Earth are you able to even post a question here?
